  • First American Launched in Space

    First American Launched in Space
    Alan Barlett Shepard was the first American to be launched into space. After Sputnik was launched in 1957, the US stepped up their game in attempting to send a man into space. Shepard went aboard the Freedom 7 space capsule, which was constructed by NASA. Katherine Johnson contributed greatly in this successful event. She was NASA's research mathematician, which correctly calculated the numbers needed for this mission to occur.

    More than 200,000 Americans gathered in Washington, D.C. for this rally. The March on Washington was a political rally for jobs and freedom, and mainly to allow the country to open their eyes on the issues that African Americans face each and every day. Many civil rights leaders participated in this rally, including Martin Luther King Jr. This was when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech.

    John F. Kennedy was the 35th president of the US. In the 1960's, he ran against Richard Nixon, in which Kennedy ended up winning. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He was riding in a open-top convertible while waving at the crowd as he rode along.     This was the date in which the US entered the war. The reason for this was because the US wanted to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam. The Domino Theory was in effect, and it was what was most feared during this time.Before the US entered, North Vietnam and South Vietnam were in conflict. After Ho Chi Minh rose to power, his communist views were being established, therefore trying to take over South Vietnam. The US joined, helping it's ally, South Vietnam.

    The Black Panther Party was to protect and patrol African American neighborhoods from police brutality (self-defense movement). It originated in Oakland, California, and was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. Malcolm X was a huge factor in this political movement, but was cut down. However, other members of this organization kept it active, and was determined to generate Malcolm X's ideas as well.

    George Wallace was the governor of Alabama. He was shot by a 21 year old man named Arthur Bremer. When Wallace was admitted to the hospital, he was paralyzed from the waist down. He was a member of the civil rights movement, and was constantly fighting for the rights of all African Americans. However, due to his condition, he had to drop out of the campaign.

    Four or five men broke into Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington. They were trying to steal important documents and bug phone calls. Nixon was re-elected later, and journalists and investigations began to put together pieces, in which they came to a conclusion that the White House was involved in the crime. Soon, Nixon released tapes in which he tried to use the CIA to block the FBI investigation of the burglary. He then resigned.

    End of Vietnam War for U.S.
    President Nixon withdraw-ed US troops out of Vietnam and out of the war in 1969. However, the South Vietnamese gained American training, therefore began to fight on their own. People back in the US had huge protests against the war. Citizens did not want the US to get involved again with this war. The last set of US troops left in 1973, which officially ended the US involvement in the war. South Vietnam ended up surrendering to North Vietnam.

    Hurricane lasted from the 29th of August to the 11th of September. It was the most intense tropical cyclone during this time period. It emerged from the coast of Africa. It was categorized as a 4, which as the days went by, became a 5. It affected areas such as Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Louisiana, Texas, and others. Its damage was over $162 million due to how strong this storm was.

    President Ford was in Sacramento, California when the incident occurred. He was walking near the California Capitol when a red haired young woman named Lynette Fromme approached him. She pulled out a handgun and aimed it towards him. However, before she was able to shoot him, Secret Service agents tackled her to the ground. This woman was a member of the Charles Manson family, ran by cult leader Manson. She plotted to kill Ford in order to win Manson's approval.

    Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak are the founders of Apple. However, without Ronald Wayne, the technology carried by Apple wouldn't exist. Jobs and Wozniak shared an interest in technology, and soon developed the first Apple computer.
