    James Cleveland Owens was born on the 12th of September, 1913 in Oakvile, Alabama, USA.

    When he was nine his family moved Cleveland, Ohio his nickname then was J.C, when his teacher asked him his name for the roll book James said J.C because of his strong sothern accent his teacher mistook it fo Jesse, so the name stuck and he was called Jesse from then on.

    Jesse won quite a lot of records in High School. He got six foot in his high jump, 7.53m in his long jump, 9.4 seconds in his 91m, 20.7 seconds in his 201m. He thought he could do more so he set three more records in forty-five minutes.

    He worked at five different jobs and also found time to practice his athletics. He worked as a night elevator operator, a waiter, he pumped gas, worked in the library stacks and served a stint as a page in the Ohio Statehouse.

    Jesse Owens made his way to the Big Ten Championships (this is ten big championships). In one of these championships he had a very bad back but he still convinced his coach to let him run in the 91m and he came first and tie with the world record.

Adolf Hitler thought that Germany was the better race, but Jesse proved Hitler wrong and Jesse was the first American to win four gold medals. This changed the way the whites looked at the blacks..

    Jesse died of lung cancer on the 31st of March 1980 in Tucson, Arizona. He had three daughters which started the Jesse Owens foundation. There is no doubt that Jesse would be proud.
