    Herbert Hoover takes office
    Herbert Hoover was our 31st president of the United States and our president before Roosevelt. He was blamed by many people for the Great Depression.
  • The Dust Bowl

    The Dust Bowl
    The Dust Bowl ranged from the 1930s-1936. This was a period of severe drought. During this time, the ground dried, and nothing was left but fine, dirty, dust. Dust storms would form and look like giant thunderstorm clouds in the sky. It was a very tough time for farmers.

    Father Coughlin attacks FDR, Jews
    Father Coughlin was a Catholic priest who was Canadian born. He spoke out against Jews and Roosevelt during this time.

    The RFC is also known as the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. The Emergency Relief Act allowed for the RFC to distribute money to state govenments for direct relief. This was Herbert Hoover's program to help early on in the depression by trying to inspire confidence in banks.     In 1932, 43,000 marchers, 17,000 of them WWI veterans, marched up to Washington D.C. to protest. They protested because many of these veterans have been jobless since the beginning of the Great Depression. In 1924, the World War Adjusted Compensation Act awarded these veterans bonuses that they wanted to redeem. Sadly, the government cleared out the "Hooverviles" and burned them down to the ground with all the the people's belongings in them.

    The Rape of Nanjing was an event took place in Nanjing China. This was where the Japanese invaded and killed 300,000 people and raping 80,000.
