China pleaded for aid for some years ,but aid was not serious until this major conflict. China recieved help from Western democracies and other countries such as Russia. Stalin thought the Japanese were a geat threat. 10-20 million civillians were killed during the invasion.

    Rape of Naking In 1937 Japan marched into Chinas capital of Nanking they killed 300,000 of the 600,000 people that livee there at the time.That is what gave it the name.The Chinese brught a fierce resistance in Shanghai which angered the Japanese who thought they would have an easy victory. This caused them to seek revegence in Nanking. The Chinese soldiers outnumbered the Japanese ,but were severly unorganized and nor battle hardened. They retreated and the 50,000 Japanese troops took the city in four days.

    Invasion of Poland With more than 2,000 tanks and 1,000 planes Germany took Poland by force.Without fear of Russia attacking due to the Germany Soviet Act. A majority of the supporters of Hitler disagreed with this due to the non aggression act passed between the two countries a few years earlier. Germany annexed the terrortories lost to Poland by the treat of Verailles.

    Fall Of ParisThe Fall of Paris was a quick non resistant happening. French soldiers and many civilians left the city leaving it a ghost town. The military thought that there would be no reason to damage the city and there was not a strategic advantage for taking or keeping the city. So they left and tried to put up a strong defensive barrier outside the city.There wasn't a very aggressive resistance people still went to the cafes and police still patrolled the streets.

    German Bdlitzkrieg Blitzkrieg is another name for "lightning war." It was used to minimize human casulaties and lower use of artillery. This tactic was used in the invasions of Belgium,Netherlands and France in the 1940's. It was also used by the German general Erwin Rommel during the North African campaign. It was used by General Patton during his European campaign.

    Operation Barbossa Operation Barbossa was a large invasion of the Soviet Union. With 3 million troops ,150 divisions ,and 3 thousand tanks. It was the "finest army to fight oin the 20th century. The army expanded from North Cape to the Black Sea 2,000 miles. In the first month Germany invaded much of the Soviet Union.Weather took effect slowing them down. With no equipment for the cold they still pressed on.The Soviets counter attacked and Germany slowly retreated.

    Pearl Harbor At an American nval base near Honolulu,Hawaii hundreds of Japanese fighter planes had baegan an assault. They took 20 naval vessels and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 American soldiers and sailors were killed and another 1,000 wre injured. The day after the United States declared war on Japan and finally entered WWII. The assault happened ,because japans invasions of China upset the U.S. causing them to start trade emargoes. Hurting the supply of things like oil in Japan.

    Wannsee Conference 15 high ranking German military officials gathered in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee. This conference was deciding the annihalation of the European Jewish community. It was used to secure support from other government figures. Most not knowing that the order came down from the very top of the Nazi regime.

    The Battle of StalingradThe battle of Stalingrad was the successful retaking of Stalingrad by Russian forces from Germany. It marked the complete turning point in the war for the Allies and also brought about massive bloodshed. Both military and civilian casualties summed up to be nearly 2 million in total. Both Russians and Germans saw the control of Stalingrad as vital to the war effort. Russian claims Stalingrad so the claim the war.

    Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Residents in the Jewish ghettos of Warsaw took up an armed revolt against the deportation of extermination camps. Germans were ambused by armed civilians and were forced to withdraw. Ths brought about more uprisings throughout Germany against Nazi occupation.

    Operation Gomorrah This was seen the revenge of the British. British bomber bombed cities throughout Germany after suffering multiple civilian casualties when Germany had it's own bombing rush in their civilian held cities. The British bombed the country by night, and the U.S. bombed them by day. This killed over 30,000 people and destroyed over 280,000 buildings. This rought destruction to German Morale.

    Allies Invade Italy After numerous Axis defeats, the Italian government made secret negotiations with the Allies to surrender. Allied troops landed on the port of Sisily with little resistence and effectivley took all of Italy. Italy was completely free of Axis control after a ever slow and costly amount of battles.

    D-Day This attack also known as Operation Overlord was a joint ally attack of 156,000 troops along five beaches a 50 mile stretch on a heavily fortified Normandy,France coast. It was one of the largest operations in war history and took a while to plan. Soldiers were trained in a mock beach taking before the actual attack. They mislead German forces in the location of the attack. Started liberation of France.

A majority of the bombing runs would have been done in Germany to kill key German personnel. The plan was canceled due to poor bombing runs in the past.

    The Bulge Adolph Hitler attempts to split the allied armies by launching a surprise American soldiers tried desperatly to slow down the German advance in such places as Bastogne. The allied front looked like a large prtusion or "bulge."The battle was the cosliest battle for the U.S. with over 100,000 casulties.

Around 23,000 Japanese soldiers fought from dugouts and a large series of cave systems. After a month of fight, marines took Iwo Jima and allowed for one of the strongest American victories in history.

    VE Day VE day is also known as Victory in Europe day it was the day German soldiers in Europe finally laid down their arms and surrendered. Many Germans tried one final push before 2 million were taken hostage. 13,000 British POW's were released. There were some small pockets of German soldiers still fighting the Soviet Union which caused 600 more casualties the war didn't end until May 9th for them.

The inital goal of the American forces was to take the airbase and prevent further air support for the Japanese forces. Civilian and Military casualties reached the highest in the war and showed a bit hopelessnss to expectations of the war ending soon.

Around 50,000 people were liberated and cared for. Though the people of the concentration camps were liberated, the disgust for Nazi Germany and Germany in the general became widespread through Western culture.

    Atomic Bomb On this day the U.S. became the first country to drop the atomic bomb. Dropping the bomb Hiroshima ended the World War ,but may have also started the Cold War. When the bomb hit it instantly killed 80,000 people.Tens of thousands died from injuries and radiation poisining. The city was ruined and several days later Japan surrendered. Truly a scary weapon that was developed for death.
