Saint Domingue, the french colony was the first Latin American territory to free itself due to manipulation and the brutal methods that the masters of the 100,000 slaves in order to keep the slaves powerless and to avoid a revolt.

Although the ideas of the French Revolution still swept across Europe, Brazil had won its independence in a bloodless revolution.

Emotion was an essential key element in this movement which portrayed a wide range range of ideas and attitudes. An Example of the romantic artists beliefs were loving the beauty of untamed nature. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe published "The Sorrows Of Young Werther" in 1774. The novel discusses a sensitive man who is driven to suicide from his hopeless love for a virtuous married woman.
