    Missouri Compromise
Henry Clay created a compromise with the north and south states by letting Missouri become a Slave state while Maine became a free state. This affected history by being one of the starting factors of the civil war.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
David Wilmot proposed a bill that would help end slavery by banning it in the north and preventing any more expansion of slavery. The Proviso passed in the House but failed in the Senate. It was introduced a second time but the same thing happened. So the proviso was never passed.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
Henry Clay also created a compromise that was both alright for the northern and southern states, it was a group of 5 bills that allowed California to join as a free state, outlawed slavery in DC, made the boundary for Texas and Mexico and it gave states popular sovereignty over the major issue if slavery
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was apart of the compromise of 1850 and it gave the South the power to take slaves that escaped into the north to bring them back to the south. Some owners would just pick up a free black man and make him a slave for easy profits.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin Book

    Uncle Tom's Cabin Book
Created by Harriet Beecher Stowe, this book revealed all the horrors of what slaves deal with every day to the north. Stowe wanted to reveal all the bad things slaves go through in this book. This book was seen as exaggerated and false by the south.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
Stephan Douglas gave Kansas Nebraska the option to vote on slave or not slave. Things got bad in the states and fights starting to break out thus "bleeding Kansas". It showed the popular sovereignty was not such a good idea.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was trying to sue for his rights as a free man. His slave owner, Emerson, had died while he was in a free state, therefore making him a free man, was his statement on why he should be free. He lost the case, which proved that slavery was allowed in any state, making it legal in any state.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas both ran for president with 2 very different ideas. Lincoln was ready to put slavery to a stop. Douglas however, wanted the states to decide on whether or not if they should be a slave state. Lincoln won most of the debates, which lead him to become one of our greatest presidents
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
John Brown was a very devoted abolitionist, he was certain that the south was the fault of this world, so he gathered a group of "soldiers" and attempted a raid on Harper's Ferry, which held many guns. He wanted to start a slave revolt with these actions. His raid failed but he showed many problems with the south in the process.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Lincoln's Election
Lincoln was finally elected president after a bit and was ready to take charge. He won in all of the free states and gained most of their votes. He wanted to fix the slave issue that has been going for quite some time. After his election, the south was done and decided to secede starting with South Carolina.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
Lincoln won the election and therefore the south was doomed, at least they thought so, so they left the Union. It started with South Carolina in 1860. They then convinced several other slave states to join them for "freedom". The war will last for 4 years, killing the most Americans ever in one war
