    The Persian Wars

    The Persian Wars were a conflict between Greece and Persia beginning in 520 BCE. King Darius of Persia decided to expand his empire to Macedonia, and then Athens. He invaded Greece but It does not appear Darius wanted wealth, but rather it was status. The Persians were defeated at the Battle of Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis. The Persians vastly outnumbered the Greeks, but suffered a greater loss. The Greeks were ultimately victorious. The Persians eventually signed a peace treaty.

    The Golden Age of Athens

    Alexander the Great was the son of Philip II of Macedonia. He was born in 356 BCE and died in 323 BCE. He became king when his father was assassinated at his daughter’s wedding. He was well educated and well trained in the military. He had been educated by Aristotle, a great philosopher. He conquered Greece, the Persian Empire, Anatolia, Egypt, and India. He died of malaria at the age of 33. The empire was split up between his generals.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    Peloponnesian War

    The Peloponnesian Wars (431- 404 BCE) were between Athens and Sparta. They began because Athens became too powerful.They forced the other city states to remain in the Delian League and continue paying taxes. Sparta created the Peloponnesian League to counteract them. A plague struck Athens; one third of the population died including Pericles. Both city-states were weakened which allowed Philip II of Macedonia to conquer Greece.

    Alexander the Great

    The Golden Age (479-431 BCE) was a period when Pericles led Athens. It was a time of economic prosperity, art, sculpture, theatre, philosophy and direct democracy. Wealth was attributable to the taxes received from the Delian League. The city was made beautiful by great buildings including the Parthenon. The sculptures from this time period portrayed only beautiful flawless people.
