The first object to be called a “learning machine” was invented in the year of 1924. The learning machine enabled students to independently take their assessments without instruction from the teacher. -
The Teaching Machine
Professor BF Skinner of Harvard University created a “teaching machine” that shared many similarities with the first learning machine, but also had its differences. The teaching machine allowed schools to administer programmed instruction to its students. -
The Computer Based Training Program
The first computer based training program was used first at the University of Illinois for students that attended the institution. After The University of Illinois’ usage of the training program, many other school started to incorporate it into their systems. -
Interactive Online Learning
Beginning near the seventies online learning became more interactive. One of the first universities to start using interactive online learning was the Open University of Britain. The university discovered learning via email and found many other ways to learn as well. Before, the university did something close but instead by mail. -
Introduction of the Internet
Once an abundance of people were able to get their hands on technology that enabled access to the internet, many started using it to their advantage for learning. People were now able to go online for instructions on certain skills that needed to be worked on and expand their academic knowledge. This is one of the first variations of e-learning. -
Online Learning Evolved
During the era of the nineties, many schools started to develop institutions based solely around online learning. People that were not able to go to school due to inconveniences now took online courses to help their education. This was merely the start of the ever growing online education industry. -

Modern Day E-Learning
The use of technology in the everyday lives of people has grown tremendously to the point that almost everyone keeps a tiny computer in their pocket. With the advancements in technology wider audiences are now able to be reached and grade levels for online learning come in a variety. New online learning allows children or adults of any age to study online without the time restrictions of the traditional classroom setting. Just as technology has grown, so has E-Learning.
