    A series of peaceful protests calling for democracy and citizen freedom arose after a number of children expressed the belief using graffiti in a school saying that "The people topple the regime" and then got arrested and tortured for believing so. The government's response was opening fire and killing dozens of innocent individuals.
  • Spring 2013

    ISIS, a group that began as al Qaeda in Iraq during 2004 announced its arrival in northern Syria after seizing Raqqa. The objective of ISIS is to force their extremist ideologies on all areas they seize and control.
  • September 2014

    The U.S began leading a series of airstrikes on various ISIS targets in Syria with the assistance of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain. This offensive resulted in 553 deaths.
  • May - August 2015

    ISIS seized Palmyra, and doing so, they began blowing up many of the ancients temples and shrines. In addition to this, ISIS executed 25 captives in the city's ancient ampitheater. This gave ISIS control of 10 out of 14 Syrian provinces.
  • November 2015

    In September, Obama announced plans to allow 10,000 Syrians entry in the U.S next year. Following that, 31 state governors stated oppositions to allowing Syrian refugees in their states. Death tolls are now at 250,000 with 22 million Syrians having fled from their homes.
