    Jan van Ribeck of Dutch East India Company captures the Cape Colony at Table Bay
    In 1652, the Boers were looking for unsettled land to create a supply base on. When they found South Africa, they immediatelymade their base surrounding the Table Bay. This formed the Cape Colony.

    British Capture the Cape Colony
    In 1795, the British moved in to south Africa. In search for land, they captured the Dutch Cape Colony. Later on in 1803, they gave the land back to the Boers, but in 1806, the British took control again.
  • The Zulu Empire Becomes a Force

    The Zulu Empire Becomes a Force
    The Zulu Empire is a tribe in Africa who felt they should fight back to all the European countries invading their country. The Shaku Zulu, or leader of the Zulu tribe, set aside 10 years to make his men as strong as they possibly could be. Through all of their training, the Zulu tribe turned into a stronger military force that would compete with Britian and the Dutch to get their land back
  • The Boers Go on the "Great Trek"

    The Boers Go on the "Great Trek"
    After dealing with British rule for just about thirty years, the Boers decided they had enough and went on a journey to land unsettled by the British to escape their rule. This was known as the Great Trek. Large groups of Boers would move into northern South Africa into the Orange Free State and Transvaal. This was one of the most significant Boer events ever. This lasted for five years.

    The Boers Make Transvaal a Republic
    Since the Boers fled the British and the Cape Colony, they settled in Tranvaal and the Orange Free State. Transvaal was pronounced a republic after the Sand River Convention of 1852. The Sand River Convention was a meeting where the Boers declared Transvaal a republic.

    Diamonds are Discovered in Kimberley, South Africa
    Diamonds were first discovered near the Vaal river a long way from the Cape Colony. Diamonds are a big deal because of their rarity. The discovery of diamonds began a diamond rush. This attracted everyone from around the world looking to become rich. People looking to mine and buisnessmen all came to Kimberley. One of the buisness men was a man named Cecil Rhodes. Cecil Rhodes and his De Beers Consoliated Company managed to gain control of most of the diamond mines in Kimberley.

    The British take Transvaal
    The British annexed, or took by conquering, Transvaal. This left the Boers very mad and would play a huge part of a war in years to come. The British took Transvaal forcefully and without the Boers agreeing.
  • Zulus Fight British

    Zulus Fight British
    In 1879, the Shaka Zulu lead him and his army into Natal to try and gain land. The British were very well trained and it would be a test for the Zulu army. The fight was very close wihile it lasted, but the British ended up winning. One of the main reasons the British won was their advanced weaponry. The Maxim Gun was the first automatic gun and the British were using it throughout the war. In July of 1879, the British captured the Zulu capital, Ulindi.

    In 1880, the British and Boers went to war. The reason for this was the British at first pushed the Boers out of the Cape and forced them to move north. When gold and diamond mines were discovered, the British wanted to move up and take the Boers land again for the wealth. The Boers weren't going to take the unfair treatment and went to war. The British ended up winning and taking the land.

    Gold Found in Transvaal
    Gold was also a very big way to earn money. Much like diamonds, gold is very expensive fue to its rarity and beauty. This was a big deal because the Boers could now get rich from mining gold. With this money, they could buy better weapons to help in fighting the British.

    Apartheid is racial segregation and economic discrimination towards anyone who isn't white in South Africa. In South Africa, this really wasn't fair because the majority is black and the Whites came in and invaded their land.

    Nelson Mandela Fights Back
    Nelson Mandela was a black man living in Africa who thought that Apartheid was unfair and that the people should be doing something to put a stop to it. After every was classified by race, Mandela led the African National Congress with a campaign about civil disobedience

    Mandela Sent to Jail for Life
    Mandela was put in prison for all of his attempts to stop apartheid.
