Slavery and the Events Leading up to the Civil War

    The Underground Railroad (2)

    This event took place over a long time span it didn't just happen overnight. Some places that this event took place were in several abolitionists homes. Many slaves stowed away on different trains. Not every slave traveled the same path as one another. This event was important because it showed the progression of slavery and how they slowly achieved freedom. This event ties in with the Civil war because slavery is a major part of the Civil War.

    There were a ton of abolotionist like Thomas Garrett, William Lloyd Garrision, Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Still, David Walker, John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Levi Coffin, and Harriet Tubman that helped in a big way with the Underground railroad, but they were just some of the few abolionist that helped out with the underground railroad. Other people that were involved in the underground were slaves. This event was about how slaves wanted to escape their unfair lives and be free.

    Frederick Douglass was once a slave, but then he ran- away and earned his freedom, He did many things as a free man to help slaves escape the south. Douglass was a station master and he helped to house run-away slaves. He also did public speaking on the the anti-slavery movement. He wrote "The North Star" and it was published on December 3, 1847. February 14, 1817 is when Frederick August Washington Bailey (Frederick Douglass) was born. He was born in Tuckahoe, Maryland.

    Douglass was very important because he did a lot of work helping slaves. Much of his life was dedicated to helping slaves and promoting anit-slavery views. Sadly Frederick Douglass died at the age of 78
  • The Missouri Compromise (1)

    The Missouri Compromise (1)
    People involved in the Missouri Compromise are congress, Senator William Pinkney,and Congressman James Tallmadge. This event ia all about whether or not Missouri should become a slave state or a free state. The Compromise took place in congress. The Missouri Compromise took place on March 3, 1820 because congress wasn't able to say yes or no to Missouri being a slave or free state. This Compromise would later effect the way slave and free states were selected.

    This event was important because it changed the way territories were chosen as either slave or free states. In the end the issue way resolved in a two- part compromise. Missouri gained admission to the Union as a slave state, but everything north of the 36' 30' line would be free.

    This event was very important because after it all the slaves were even more ill-treated. They had more rights taken away. White people panicked and 200 slaves were murdered. The slaves definitely recieved a negative effect from Nat Turner's Rebellion because of the abuse they recieved and the amount of restrictions they were given.

    Nat Turner led 60 to 70 slaves to Southampton County Virginia. Nat Turner and his small army of oppressed were rebelling against the slave owners. They wanted to get revenge for the cruel treatment, they wanted to be free. Nat Turner chose August 22, 1831 to begin his rebellion because this was the day Nat Turner believed that God gave him a sign to lead the blacks in a rebellion. This Rebellion took place in Southampton County Virginia.

    Kansas- Nebraska Act (1)
    Senator Stephen Douglas came up with the Kansas- Nebraska Act. He needed Kansas and Nebraska to become states. Stephen also wanted to become President. In January 1854 declared that people should forget the 36' 30' line, and have popular sovereignty. The bill angered the north and they called Douglas a sellout. January 4, 1854 was the exact date that Stephen Douglas introduced the bill. This event happened before the Civil War.

    This event occurred because Stephen Douglas wasn't thinkng and he wanted two things. He wanted Chicago to benefit from the west and he wanted to become President. In the end he obtained virtually no votes for president.

    Even though on paper it seems as though the north got more out of this compromise, but in reality the south gained more.

    Henry Clay,Senator John C. Calhoun, Millard Fillmore, and Stephen Douglass were a part of this compromise. This event is about finding a way to balance both interests of the north and south. Henry Clay wanted to find a way to please both the north and south. California was able to become a slave state. This compomise also decided what to do with the land that had been won in the Mexican Ameican War. Washington was also no longer allowed to have slave trade, but slavery would still be allowed.

    John Brown an abolionist led severl New Englanders to a settlement and killed several men. May 21, 1856 is when John Brown led New Englanders to kill those men. This happened near Pottawatomie Creek. Brown was angered at the way slavery supporters treated slaves. All this violence is the reason for the gruesome nickname "Bleeding Kansas".

    This event ended in tensions pushing the country to the brink of war.

    This event is all about how Dred Scott (a slave) tries to gain his freedom. It also talks about all the struggles he faced. Like his owners the Blow family sold him, Dr. Emerson the man he was sold to died and then he was left to Mrs. Emerson. He fought in court with her for his and his wifes freedom. This took place March 6, 1856 because Dred and his wife did not want to gice up there freedom after the little taste they had of it. This event was important because Dred Scott never gave up.

    This event happened because four men all were running for president and all of them took different approaches to try achieving Presidency. In the end Lincoln won 40% of the votes.

    Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Beckinridge, and John Bell all ran for president against each other in this time period. Lincoln, Douglas, and Beckingridge were all democrats. Leaving Bell as the odd ball. November 6, 1860 is the date when the election too place. This event happened exactly one month before the Civil War.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    The Confederates, Major Robert Anderson, Lincoln, and P.G.T. Beaurgard were all apart of the attack on Fort Sumnter. This event is all about Fort Sumnter not surrendering and the south attacking it. The time that this event took place was on April 12, 1861. This event took place in the hard of Charleston, South Carolina. The reason that is event occurred was because Major Robert Anderson refused to surrender. In the end the war started a second American Revolution.
