  • Six Year Old

    Six Year Old
    Physical : Baby teeth start to fall out around age 6 to be replaced by permanent adult teeth Emotional : With growing language skills, kids get increasingly better at describing what has happened, what they feel, and what they think. Intellectual : Understand the concept of numbers Cognitive : Focus on a task in school for 15 minutes
  • Seven Year Old

    Seven Year Old
    Physical : Kids in this age group generally grow about 2.5 inches a year and 4 to 7 pounds a year. Emotional : kids are getting more and more independent from their parents. They will try to show how big they are, and do things that might be dangerous. Intellectual : They have begun to see that some words have more than one meaning. That helps them understand jokes and puns and start verbally expressing a sense of humor. Cognitive : Can tell time .
  • Eight Year Old

    Eight Year Old
    Physical : They’re getting more coordinated physically -- jumping, skipping, chasing Emotional : Children start to relax about the opposite sex. Boys and girls might mix more easily during playtime. They might become interested in boy-girl stuff without wanting to talk about it. Intellectual : Reading skills become more sophisticated. Kids are reading more for content than to learn how to do it. Cognitive : He or she likes games and competition.
  • Nine Year Old

    Nine Year Old
    Physical: 9-year-old will take a leap forward in sports like soccer, baseball, or basketball.

    Emotional: Hanging out with friends is important, boys will be more likely to want to be with other boys, and girls with other girls.
    Intellectual: They’re able to write a story several paragraphs long on the same subject or an outline with a beginning, a middle, and an end.

    Cognitive: They can connect letters, write letters of the same size, and write in a straight line without lines on a page.
  • Ten Year Old

    Ten Year Old
    Physical: Girls grow faster than boys and may have major growth spurts at 10. Emotional: Should recognize and consider other people’s opinions and views and have a sense of what’s right and wrong, fair or unfair . Intellectual: In math, should be able to do more difficult word problems and work with fractions and decimals. Cognitive: Take part in class discussions and share their own ideas.
  • Eleven Years Old

    Eleven Years Old
    Physical: Growth spurt and accompanying growth pains and cramps; the need to both sleep and eat more. Emotional: Begins to question authority figures. Intellectual: Start learning mathematical concepts like variables, ratios, and negative numbers, and start reading books that are more challenging. Might also be reading or writing independently. Cognitive: Exhibits an increased attention span, but often rapid changing of interests.
  • Twelve Years Old

    Twelve Years Old
    Physical: Shows signs of puberty, including menstruation in girls and muscular development in boys. Emotional: Starts to show a rebellious streak. Intellectual: They are able to think beyond literal interpretations, and proverbs and idioms won’t fly over their heads anymore. Will probably get your first taste of sarcasm, and they will understand tone, as well as the actual language, in a conversation. Cognitive: Becomes aware of the concepts of justice and equality.
