    Radio Beginnings
    First radio signal is sent. Wasn't music or voice, just signals. It could have been simple morse code.
  • Marconi

    Marconi
    Marconi was supposedly the first man to send a radio signal. He was an Italian inventor. He sent this signal in 1895.
  • First "Amplifier"

    First "Amplifier"
    In 1906 the first of its kind amplifier was used. It was invented by a Canadian inventor, Reginald Fessenden. But he didn't get credit for the invention. This allowed the signals to go much further.
  • Radio Stations

    Radio Stations
    25 years to get a radio station to broadcast music/ voices. Originally named 8XK, later changed to KDKA. Frank Conrad made up the station.
  • Dawn of Advertising

    This is how a radio station makes money. In 1922 WEAF aired a 10 minute commercial for an apartment complex charging $50. This seemingly began the advertisements in t.v./ radio.
  • FRC

    The Federal Communications Commission was established in 1927. Organized the licensing of transmitters. Personal radio stations were becoming too popular so they had to limit the amount.
  • Call Letters

    Assigned call letters to identify different stations. Because different radio stations could have the same frequency, they had to tell a difference between the stations. W is east of the Mississippi and K is east of the Mississippi.

    Middle of Great Depression. During the 30's and 40's, people had to conserve money to buy a radio. This provided a escape from the poverty.
  • Family medium

    People would put big bands and different dramas/comedies. These shows would be family friendly so all could listen. This allowed radio stations to be listened to more.
  • Famous shows

    Different shows were really popular during this time of the Great Depression. These shows let be people relax and forget there problems. Shows like Amos n Andy, Gunsmoke, The Shadow, Our Miss Brooks, and Superman were some of these shows.

    It didn't work when it first started happening. Many of the characters who played in the radio shows couldn't play the part on tv because they didn't look the same. This caused many people to dislike the show because the voices didn't sound the same.
  • Radio's Demise

    Tv made its first appearance in the 1930s. Many people switched to that and sold there radios if they could afford it because the radio shows somewhat switched to tv ( not many did yet ). Radio stations lost money because Advertisements switched to TV.
  • Music!

    At this time you could only get music through a jukebox or if you bought a record. You could now listen to music through the car or the radio at home. Many people began listening again.
  • Music/ Radio progression

    The FM Transmitter allowed for stronger signals to be sent. Which then allowed for music and voices to be sent further on the radio. On the downfall It forced listeners to buy new radio sets to update there software.

    This was the first radio designed for music only. All radios before were mainly for talk shows and normal shows. This radio was the beginning of a new era, it was a very portable radio and could almost move it anywhere.
