  • Heinrich Hertz

    Heinrich Hertz
    A German physicist, named Heinrich Hertz was the first to prove that you could transmit and receive electric waves wirelessly. Today Hertz is recognized as the fundamental building block of radio and every frequency measurement. His experiments expanded the field of electromagnetic transmission and wasdeveloped further by many others in the radio.
  • Nikola Tesla

    Nikola Tesla
    Nikola Tesla has been credited with being the first person to patent radio technology. In 1943, the Supreme Court overturned Marconi's patent. Tesla was able to control radio waves by 1898.
  • Marconi

    Marconi
    Marconi was an Italian inventor. In 1895 he made history when he was able to send and receive the first radio signal. Some people believe he did not invent the radio. He had a hand in the first Transatlantic radio telegraph.
  • Radio And Communication

    Radio And Communication
    In 1899 the US Army established wireless communications with a lightship on and island off of New York. A few years later the Navy adopted the same wireless system. By 1906 ithe radiotelegraph was spread around the US.
  • Julio Baviera

    Julio Baviera
    He created the first radio in 1902. He obtained patents in England, Germany, Belgium, and Spain. Then with the blessing of the Spanish Army, he visited Marconi and worked to develop his own system.
  • Audion Tube

    Audion Tube
    The audion tube is a vacuum tube that amplified signals. The audion tube was officially made in 1906 by Lee De Forest. The idea is believed to have been made by Canadian inventor, Reginald Fessenden, although he is not given credit for inventing it.

    8XK
    The radio station started out a 8XK, but was later changed to KDKA. It was created by Frank Conrad, it was officially the first licensed broadcast station in the world. KDKA is still a radio station in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
  • Uncle Charlie

    Uncle Charlie
    Uncle Charlie was a very famous Radio show in the 1920s. It got to the point where other radio stations were complaining. He and his brother played on WOPI radio station in Bristol, Tennessee. He then cut back on music when he was shot in the left eye.
  • Radio Call Signs

    It was split from East and West of the Mississippi. East was set as W while the West was set as K. WBAP and WFAA shared a radio channel for the longest time, they would switch back and forth throughout the day and night.

    The FRC or Federal Radio Commission was a company that licensed radio stations. The FRC assigned what station frequency people would have, the call letters, and the power limits. Changed to Federal Communications Commission in 1934.
  • The Golden Era

    The Golden Era of radio was in the 1930s and 1940s. In a 1947 C. E. Hooper survey it was found that 82 out of 100 Americans were radio listeners. Some of the more popular stations were ABC, NBC, and CBS.

    Major Edwin Armstrong created the FM radio transmitter, this gave radio a stronger signal along with higher quality sound. Everyone had to then buy a new radio to get FM. On FM radio music was played, while on AM radio talk shows were played.

    Tv became popular especially with movies like Gone With The Wind, in 1939. Advertisers went over to TV when it got popular, which took money away from radios shows. People wanted radio to switch over to TV, but the people who voiced radio characters could not play TV characters because they did not look like the character, an example would be a woman playing a young girl, her voice matched the character, but her looks did not.

    The first ever American music awards was created in 1973 by Dick Clark called the American Music Awards. The AMAs were created to compete with the Grammys. The AMAs are determined by a poll of the public and music buyers, instead of being awarded on the basis of votes by members of the Recording Academy.

    Internet radio was created. Things like Youtube, Pandora, and Spotify are now used today to listen to music. This takes away from FM radio, so it has a smaller amount of listeners than it could because people do not like long commercials, so they listen to the internet where commercials are 30 seconds.
