    Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state. Outlawed slavery above the 36º 30' latitude line in the remainder of the Louisiana Territory.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Allowed California to enter the union as a free state. Divided New Mexico and Utah into territories, Stephen Douglas confirmed this in 1850.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Required all citizens to help catch African Americans trying to escape slavery, people fined $1,000 for letting fugitives escape, and put in jail. $10 for accusing southerners escape and $5 for letting them free for judges, for money some judges sent african americans to the south whether or not they were runaways.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
    Harriet Beecher wrote about the evils of slavery and injustice of Fugitive Slave Act, uncle Tom is kind and gets killed for not saying where two runaways are. Southerners said that it wasn't a good representation of slave life(Changed people's views).

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Stephen Douglas proposed his large region should be divided into two territories, Kansas and Nebraska. They hoped in time Kansas would become a slave state, arguments led close to Civil War. Missouri Compromise had banned slavery in Kansas and Nebraska.

    The U.S. Supreme Court stated that enslaved people were not citizens of the United States. African Americans did not support his decision and that slavery was legal in all territories.
  • John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown led an anti-slavery campaign on a ferry with five African-Americans. Planned to raid a gun warehouse, Brown got arrested and encouraged slave revolts. He got sentenced to death for treason and murder.

    In Charles Town they had a convention, it was a Democratic party. Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860 in a 4 way contest, Stephen Douglas (Democrat), John Breckenridge (Southern Democrat), and John Bell (Constitutional Union).
