    Also known as the Xinhai Revolution. This revolution that happened in China rid the country of the imperial dynasty (Qing) and was replaced by the Republic of China.

    A list of demands given by the Japanese to China demanding control of China's railroads, mines, etc. Yuan Shikai gave in to the demands and it angered the citizens toward Shikai and Japan.

    Students protest against the twenty-one demands given by Japan. Mao used this event to start organizations that would bring students/the youth and the workers together which helps him because his policies were directed towards them.

    Morning for Sun Yat Sen's death was short-lived because Chiang Kai Shek quickly replaced him. Kai Shek was much more conservative and ended peace with the Communist because of his strong belief of nationalism and democracy. Forced the CCP to Jiangxi Province.

    The official name of the incident with Chiang Kai Shek and his purge of communists. Mao tried to fight against this and led an army but because he was defeated he fled.

    Mao moves from Shanghai amidst the purge where he establishes the Soviet Republic of China and was elected chairman. He does a lot of canvassing and gains a lot of support.

    Mao was gaining support while in refuge, amassing 10 regions under his control which scared Chiang and he decided to stage an attack.

    Long March

    After being threatened by Chiang, Mao decided to retreat and started the Long March. Many died; more than half of the original 100,000.
  • Xi'an Incident

    Xi'an Incident
    Two generals of Chiang detained him in a demonstration of how the Nationalist wanted to stop fighting the Communists and focus on the Japanese.
  • Japanese Invasion

    Japan invades and Chiang flees the capital. He asks the Communists for help and to end the Civil war that began with the massacre. Mao agreed so they established a temporary truce.
  • People's Republic

    People's Republic
    The People's Republic of China was established and was the official start of Mao's rule.
