    After the defeat of France in the summer of 1940, Germany tried to gain power in the air over Great Britain as a prelude to invading them. Even after months of air attacks, Germany was not capable of destroying Britain's Royal Air Force. In the fall of the same year, the invasion was postponed indefinitely. Germany's bombing campaign against Britain was continued until May of 1941. The Germans ended up halting the air attacks mainly because of preparations for an invasion of the Soviet Union.

    After securing the Balkan region by invading Yugoslavia and Greece in April 1941, the Germans and their allies invaded the Soviet Union on June 22nd of 1941, this was in direct violation of the German-Soviet Pact. In June and July of the same year, the Germans also occupied the Baltic states. Stalin became a major wartime Allied leader, in opposition to Nazi Germany and its Axis allies.

    After the U.S. surrender of the Bataan Peninsula on the main Philippine island, Luzon, to the Japanese during WWII on April 9th of 1942, the 75 thousand Filipino and American troops on Bataan were forced to make a 65-mile march to prison camps. The marchers made this march in intense heat and were treated harshly by the Japanese guards. Thousands died in this march.

    The Battle of Midway was a clash between the U.S Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy that went on for six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The U.S Navy's victory in the air-sea battle and its successful defense of the major base located at Midway Island crushed Japan's hopes of neutralizing the United States as a naval power.

    The British 8th Army began the Allied invasion of the Italian peninsula. On the day of the landing, the Italian government agreed to the Allies' terms for surrender secretly. On July 10, 1943, the Allies began their invasion of Axis-controlled Europe with landings on the island of Sicily.

    Over 150,000 Allied soldiers landed in France on June 6th of 1944 as part of a huge military operation which was ended by the end of August. The first US troops crossed into Germany on September 11th of 1944, one month after Soviet troops had crossed the eastern border. The Germans launched an unsuccessful counterattack in Belgium and northern France known as the Battle of the Barge in mid-December. Allied air forces attacked Nazi industrial plants.

    U.S warplanes launched a new bombing offensive against Japan dropping 2,000 tons of incendiary bombs on Tokyo over the course of only two days. These bombs incinerated almost 16 square miles in and around Tokyo and killed between 80 and 130 thousand civilians.

    On February 19th of 1945, U.S. Marines made a landing on Iwo Jima. They were met almost immediatly with challenges they didnt see coming. The first challenge was was that the beaches of the island were made up steep of soft volcanic ash which made sturdy footing difficult. While the Marines struggled forward, the Japanese waited. Kuribayashi's artillery positions in the mountains above the beach opened fire, stalling the marines and causing significant casualties.
