    The Battle of Thermopylae

    The Battle of Thermopylae
    The Battle of Thermopylae was the second battle of the Persian War. It took place at Thermopylae, a mountain pass in 480BCE. The Greeks united for the first time to stop Xerxes from taking Athens. The Spartans were outnumbered 300 to 10,000 and were able to hold Thermopylae for 3 days. The Spartans ended up losing, however this battle showed that the Greeks were powerful even though they were outnumbered. This battled also united the Greek city-states to fight against the Persians.

    Battle of Salamis

    Battle of Salamis
    The Battle of Salamis was the last battle in the Persian War. It was a sea battle near the island of Salamis in 480BCE. The Greeks were out numbered once again, however they were able to sink 1/3 of the Persian fleet. This is because of Athens' superior ship designs and strategies. This battle marked the end of the Persian war and the Greeks won. The Delian League was created to defend against any future attacks. Athens was the leader and gained lots of wealth.

    Golden Age of Athens

    After the Persian War, Athens became very wealthy and the leader of the Delian League. They were lead by Pericles who has three goals; increase democracy, create a stronger navy, and make Athens more beautiful. They built the Parthenon and created 3 types of columns, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Athens had many classical arts, including statues. Athens also had many shows and theaters. Their two genres were Tragedy and Comedy. The Golden Age of Athens lasted from 479BCE to 432BCE.

    The Peloponnese War

    With Athens as leader of the Delian League, they became too powerful. Some city-states left the Delian League and created the Peloponnese League, lead by Sparta. This created conflict between the city-sates causing war between Athens and Sparta. Athens had a strong navy, however Sparta had a stronger army. Unfortunately, a plague hit Athens causing a third of the population to die. This lead to Sparta winning the war. The war lasted from 431BCE to 404BCE.
