Great Depression and Dust bowl

  • Stock Market crash

    In 1929, the stock market crashed and it caused the Great depression. Wall Street crashes and it causes money problems everywhere.
  • Dust bowl

    In 1930, after the stock market crashed, the dust bowl began. Trade began to slow down during this time. The droughts caused farmers to struggle tremendously. It did not help the struggling economy that farmers were unable to grow crops.
  • Banks collapse

    Banks began to fail during the Great Depression. One bank had $200 million that it lost when it failed. The president rose the income tax rate because he was concerned about budget deficits.
  • Roosevelt

    In 1932, president Roosevelt was elected. The economy would reach rock bottom after a 27% shrink during his time as president. Roosevelt made a speech and a plan to solve the economic struggle of America.
  • "New Deal"

    Roosevelt had put together a plan to tackle the Great depression. He put 15 laws in place to try to help. He created the emergency banking act as part of the "new Deal," which closed all the banks in America. He signed many acts that would help aid reform and recovery from the depression.
  • Fireside Chats

    In 1933, President Roosevelt begins his series of broadcasts called "Fireside Chats." It was used to inform the country about the government's attempts to get out of the Great depression. He talked the people through the new laws and bank laws he was creating.
  • Townsend

    Support for the Townsend act grew immensely during 1935. There was more than 5,000 clubs and over 2 million members.
  • Election

    Roosevelt was voted for president again in 1936. During this year droughts in America were serious and caused many deaths. The unemployment rate had lowered to 16.9% by this year.
  • Economic Growth

    During 1938 the economy started to grow again. It eventually brought the country out of the Great depression. It was an important year for people all throughout America. Unemployment rates were still high.
  • Federal Security

    During 1939, a federal security agency was created to offer federal education funding, food, and social security. It was to try to help people get back on their feet after the depression.
