    Call of the Estate General
    France was losing a lot of money and was on the edge of bankruptcy because of outrageous spending of King Louis XV. His poor economic decisions led up to the call of the French Monarch to the Estate General to order a new land tax levy. The Estate General was made up of the clergy, the middle class and the lower class citizens.

    Because the National Assembly, led by Honore Gabriel Riqueti, was afraid that a royal attack by King Louis XVI was imminent, they met in an indoor tennis court where they took an oath "not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established." This oath will become important in the revolution as the Third Estate would continue to protest to have more representation.

    During the French Revolution, the Bastille, a prison symbolic of power, was attacked by an angry and aggressive mob. The mob came for the huge ammunition storages found inside the prison. The governor was not complying with them, so they violently killed him an put his head on a spike for the public to see.

    The king realized that because of the revolution, his family was in danger. So the royal family decided to flee to Varennes. They got caught when they arrived at Varennes.
