  • Jamestown

    Jamestown
    First English colony that lasted. Charted by the Virginia Company. Jamestown was located on the coast of Virginia. The first winter almost everyone died by either disease or starvation.
  • Virginia House of Burgesses

    Virginia House of Burgesses
    First legislative assembly in the American Colonies. First met in Jamestown. It was created by the General Assembly and by its creation the General Assembly became bicameral.
  • Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower Compact
    First written governing document of the Plymouth Colony. Written and signed by the men of the Mayflower before they got of the ship.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    Armed rebellion of the Virginia citizens led by Nathanial Bacon agianst the Virginia Governor William Berkley. It showed the difference between the backcountry farmers and the coastal elites.
  • Salem Witch Trials

    Salem Witch Trials
    Series of hearings a prosecutions of people of the massachusets colony who were accused of witchcraft. Over 200 people were accused 19 of whom were found guilty and hung.
  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    Fight between the British Colonies and the French colonies both were supported by their mother country and Native Americans. The British won and there were no longer French colonies. The war showed the British Colonists that Britain could be beaten. It was called the 7 years war even though it lasted 9 years.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    Issued by King George the Third. It said that the colonists could not expand west passed the Appalation Mountains. The colonists did not like it and went anyway.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Political protest by the Son of Liberty agains the British Governments taxation on tea. They dumped around $200,000 worth of tea into the harbor.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Law that said stamps had to be on all printed documents. The stamps were not free. It mainly effected the newspaper printers and lawyers. Repealed May 18th 1766
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Lowed taxes on sugar from 6 cents to 3 cents but actually inforced it now and it stopped smuggling. It also made it so that smugglers were tried in British Courts instead of in Colonial Courts.

    The Quartering act required colnonies to provied British soldiers with housing and food.

    The Tea Act was a act that imposed taxes on tea in the British Colonies. It was really justs to show that Brtiain could impose taxes on anything they wanted to.

    A series of measures passed by the British Parliament that taxed goods imported to the American Colonies. Named after Charles Townshed who proposed the acts.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Happened in Boston Massachusetts. Incident on Kings street where the British Army shot and killed five people while under attack by a mob. It was used as a political statement by the colonists.

    Shadow Governements created by the patriot leaders on the eve of the American Revolution. They disseminated the colonial interpretaion of the British actions between the colonies and to foreign governments.

    A series of laws passed meant to punish the massachusets colonists for the Boston Tea Party.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    Meating of delegates of 12 of the 13 colonies in Pensylvania. They met at Carpenter's Hall early in the American Revolition. They were discussing what to do to retaliate against the taxes the British Parlament had imposed on them.

    The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements in the American Revolution.

    The final attempt of the colonists not to go to war with the British. In the document the colonists pledged their allegience to the crown and stated their rights as British Citizens.
