    In the first stage of Erikson's timeline, turst vs. mistrust, Jacob is too young to take care of himself or even understand events around him. He relies on his parents to provide him with everything he needs, and uses that trust as a framework for his life.

    In Erikson's fourth stage, industry vs inferiority, a young child is learning the pleasure of applying himself to new tasks, be it intellectual, physical or creative. It is important that they are encouraged at this stage, or they may learn to believe that they are powerless or inferior.

    In Erikson's sixth stage, intimacy vs isolation, one learns what is means to share a life with someone else. It involves trust, mutual understanding and vulnerability. Someone who is unable to pass through this stage can become distant and isolated, making long-lasting relationships strained and difficult.
