Development of the Baby

  • Week One

    Week One
    The last menstrual period and the beginning of the first trimester of pregnancy. During the first week of pregnancy the mother most likly won't even know she is pregant until she misses her period.
  • Second week

    Fertilizaion/ ovulation happens during the second week of pregnancy. The egg is released and fertilized 10 to 12 hours later. Over the next several days the fertilized egg will divide into multiple cells and start to burrow into the uterine lining.
  • Week Three

    New life begins. Cells begin to join and divide as the fertilized egg floats down into the uterus. Gender is also decided here. The "x" chromosome equals a girl and "Y" equals a boy.
  • Week Four

    The ball of cells that were week one is now an embryo. The mother is now about 4 weeks from her last period. Best time for an at home pregnancy test.
  • Week Five

    At this point the baby resembles a tadpole. It is also experiencing high growth rates. The heart will also begin to beat during this week.
  • Week Six

    The baby's nose, ears, and mouth begin to take shape. The brain and intestines also begin to develope.
  • Week Seven

    The baby has doubled in size in a matter of just week. The arms and legs are beginning to emerge, but at this point they resemle paddles more than anything.
  • Week Eight

    During this week the baby will start moving around, but the mother won't feel anything. Nerve cells will begin to branch forming primitive neural pathways. Lungs are now in development.
  • Week Nine

    The baby's basic physiology is in place, but is not fully developed. She weighs not even an ounce but is about to begin the process of gaining weight fast.
  • Week Ten

    The baby's finger nails are beginning to develope finger nails. The skin is still translucent, the limbs are beginning to bend and move.
  • Week Eleven

    The baby is almost fully formed. At this point the baby can even hiccup, but the mother still is not able to feel the baby's movements.
  • Week Twelve

    During this week the baby's reflexes start to kick in, and that means the toes and fingers are able to clench and curl. The baby is also able to fell the mother push down on her stomach.
  • Week Thirteen

    Week Thirteen
    This week is the last week of the first trimester of pregnancy. The aby now has their very own finger prints and if the mother is having a girl the ovaries already contain over 2 million eggs.
  • Week Fourteen

    The mother is finally entering the second trimester of her pregancy. At this point a miscarriage is far more unlikely, and morning sickness has faded away for the most part.
  • Week Fifteen

    At this point the baby's impulses in his brain have begun to work and he is using them for movement. The kidney's are working now aswell.
  • Week Sixteen

    The baby's scalp is starting to come together, and the ears are in the final stage of development. The baby's head is also becoming more upright.
  • Week Seventeen

    During this week the baby's cartilage is beginning to harden to the bone. She is also able to move her joints and the umbilical cord is stronger than ever.
  • Week Eighteen

    The baby is beginning to move her arms and legs and due to her growth the mother may be able to feel her baby's movements. At this point the myelin is forming around the nerves in the baby's body.
  • Week NIneteen

    The baby's five senses are finally coming into play and she may even be able hear the mothers voice. At this point some doctors encourage the mother to sing, talk lounder, read, or play different kinds of music to beginning building a relationship with the baby.
  • Week Twenty

    The baby is able to swallow now. The digestion system is now producing meconium, which is a dark goopy substance that will be past in her first boul movement, either in her diaper or in the mothers womb during delivery.
  • Week Tweny-One

    The baby's movement have progressed into full motions. The mother may begin to notice patterns in the following weeks as the motions continue.
  • Week Twenty-Two

    Eyebrows and lips are more pigmented now, giving the baby a more new born look. The color in her eyes still have not fully developed yet.
  • Week Twenty-Three

    During this time the baby's hearing is becoming better at picking up certain noises. This is the time where she may be able to catch on to noises that she will be able to identify outside of the womb.
  • Week Twenty-Four

    Not much has changed during this week. This skin is still translucent, but that will begin to change very soon. She is also still very lean, but she will start to become chubby in the upcoming weeks.
  • Week Twenty-Five

    The hair on the baby's head is beginnign to come in, and it includes color and texture. The skin is aslo beginning to fill out with fat, giving her a new born look.
  • Week Twenty-Six

    The baby is now swollowing amniotic fluid, which helps build up the lungs and help prepare them for the long life of breathing they have ahead.
  • Week Twenty-Seven

    This is the last week of the second trimester for the mother. The brain is very active now and the baby has developed a sleep schedule. The lungs are stil not fully deleloped yet.
  • Week Twenty-Eight

    Week Twenty-Eight
    The mother has now begun her third trimester of pregnancy and it is an extremely uncomfortable time for the mother as the baby is growing and taking up more room. The baby's eyesight is beginning to develope, she can aslo blink and her eye lashes have fully developed.
  • Week Twenty-Nine

    The baby's had grown more to make room for the developing brain. The lungs and muscles are hard at work in preporation for the outside world.
  • Week Thirty

    The baby is surrounded with about a pint of amniotic fluid, which she is still consuming to build her lungs up.
  • Week Thirty-One

    The baby's arms and legs are starting to fill out with fat. Her head can also move back and forth now.
  • Week Thirty-Two

    At this point the mother will be gaining about one poind a day, but the baby will be taking most of it. During the next seven week the baby will gain 1/3 to a half of her final weight that she will be born with.
  • Week Thirty-Three

    The baby's skull is not fully fused yet because she needs the skull the be somewhat limber to be delivered. The skull will not be fully fused until adulthood.
  • Week Thirty-Four

    The baby's lungs and nervous system are maturing quickly. This is usually when a baby in consisdered premature, but they usually do well in the long run due to how developed everything is already.
  • Week Thirty-Five

    The baby is very snug in the mothers stomach at this point. The liver is fully developed and the kidneys are able to process some waste
  • Week Thirty-Six

    The baby is gaining about an ounce a day. She is also losing most of the fine down covering her body, along with the vernix casosa, which protected the skull up until now.
  • Week Thirty-Seven

    Thought the baby looks like a new born, she is not quite there yet. During the last two weks the baby will fully mature in her brain and lungs.
  • Week Thirty-Eight

    The baby is still working hard to get the lungs fully prepared for the outside world. Even at this point the baby's eyes arent fully pigmented so she may come out with blue eyes, but this could change with in a year that the baby is born.
  • Week Thirty-Nine

    Week Thirty-Nine
    During this week the baby is considered full term. The uterus is preparing to give birth at any moment.
  • Week Fourty

    Week Fourty
    The mothers due date should be this week. Once the baby is ready to be born that mean the lungs are fully developed and they are ready to take in oxygen, and as soon as the baby is born that's the first thing they start doing, os breathing. Anything after this week is considered late.
