  • Panama Canal Treaty

    Panama Canal Treaty
    President Carter was known for having many Foreign Policy accomplishments, one of them being the Panama Canal Treaty. Signed by Jimmy Carter and Panamas Chief of Government, Omar Torrijos, the documents gave ownership and control of the Panama Canal to Panama, instead of the United States, by the year 2000. However, this caused lots of controversy and suspicion from other countries and Americans, who questioned the true meaning behind America giving away the Canal.

    The National Energy Act of 1978
    Cater pushed for increased use of renewable energy like solar, wind and geothermal. Many Americans relied on foreign oil at this time waiting in line for hours to fill up there car. Homeowners got tax credits for making their homes more energy efficient, and got funds to alternative fuel research. He promised by the year 2000 that at least 20% of energy would come from a renewable source. Carter often tried to start conversations about renewable energy sources and how to protect the environment.

    Camp David Accords
    Known as an incredible foreign-policy achievement, Carter works together with Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to create an agreement known as the Camp David Accords. This agreement was put in place after Egypt refused to recognise Israel, and Israel persisted to maintain territory in Egypt. This agreement led to Begin and Sadat receiving the Nobel Peace Prize later on in 1979.

    China and US Establish Official Relations
    President Carter meets with the People’s Republic of China Deng Xiaoping, and the US acknowledged that "the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China. Together, the US claimed to "maintain cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan" in the Joint Communiqué. This fully established relations with China, as the two countries fully recognize each other, and was a big accomplishment in Carter's Presidency.

    In June Carter and Brezhnev signed the treaty in Vienna, This limited nuclear forces to about 2,250, bans on certain missiles and reduce Soviet delivery vehicles by about 270. The US were below these limits and could actually increase their weapons.

    Carter signs the bill to establish the Department of education and appointed Shirley Hufstedler as it's Secretary. He did this to "establish policy for administers, collect data on us schools, and enforce federal educational laws...". The mission is to serve Americas students, to show achievement for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.

    Energy Security Act of 1980
    Carter loaned money to industries who wanted to use renewable energy and resources. As an incentive he gave tax credits to businesses and homeowners so they invest in renewable resources. He told Americans to cut back on waste, from there he had over 3,500 solar panels installed in farms and even some put on the white house. Carter stated "I hope that my example... will encourage others to pursue the same route... I hope that major power companies will adopt this as a commitment".
