    The Jomon Period begins

    This first historic period of time gets its name from a specific type of pottery discovered to be produced around the archipelago, the jomon, that describes the intricate patterns pressed into the clay. This pottery is different from the old eras pottery because of its designs and signifies the communities lived in now fixed settlements.

  • The Ice Age ends

    The ice age ends and the people in what is now Japan are separated from the mainland when the land bridges recede. The glacial periods ended and Japan became its own civilization by being physically separated from Taiwan, Korea and islands such as Sakhalin Island and the Ryukyu Islands on the continent of Asia.
