1865 to 1945 Timeline

  • President Loncoln is assassinated

    The 16th president of the U.S. Lincoln was at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. when he was shot in the head by Confederate John Wilkes Booth.
  • President Andrew Johnson is impeached

    The House of Representatives voted 126 to 47 to impeach Johnson for high crimes and misdemeanors. One week later, the House adopted eleven articles of impeachment against the President.
  • Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone

    This invention by Graham boosted industries and help made communication easier and faster. This invention had a big impact on society and continued to develop into the phones society has today.
  • The Wright brothers make the first controlled airplane flight

    Wilbur and Orville Wright the two brothers from Dayton, Ohio became the first people to fly a power controlled machine, known as the Wright Flyer. This did not simply happen overnight. The brothers had been thinking of the idea of flight off and on since childhood. This changed society forever making traveling a ton faster and started the business of flying society has today like airports.
  • The U.S. enters WW1

    After Germany had sank a few U.S. boats they joined their allies Britain, France, and Russia to fight in WW1. Under the command of Major General John J more than 2 million U.S. soldiers fought on battlefields in France. Many Americans were not in favor of the U.S. entering the war and wanted to remain neutral.
  • Nineteenth Amendment

    The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a right known as women's suffrage. This changed society ending a lot of protests after men and women could vote.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that began in the United States. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations. Lots of jobs were lost and many were struggling to survive and provide for families.
  • Minimum Wage Enforced

    It went into effect under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Congress initially set the wage at 25 cents an hour in back then currency which wasn't a lot.
  • U.S. Drops Atomic Bombs on Japan

    President Harry S. Truman decided to drop the bombs on Japan to bring the war to an end. Not doing this the war would have continued and could have had a very different outcome.
