  • Jay Treaty

    Treaty with Britan, John Jay sent to Great Britan to work our the disagreements between the nations. However, the treaty didn't solve the problems and it made some Americans mad because they thought it betrayed France.
  • Washington Proclamation of Neutrality

    The formal announcement by President Washington that declared the U.S. in a neutral conflict between France and Great Britain. It was important because it allowed the U.S. to remain neutral throughout the conflict and stay out of the war.
  • Washington's Farewell Address

    Washington ended his 20 years of public service and two terms as president. He advised citizens to come together and unite without political parties and to be aware of other nations conflicts and attachments with the United States.
  • War Hawks

    Group of Republican congressman that were in favor of war, especially with Great Britain (pro-war). They were a contributing cause to the War of 1812, as they favored it and pushed for it to happen.
  • Embargo Act of 1807

    The embargo on all trading with other foreign nations. It didn't help Americans because they could only trade with each other, ultimately harming the U.S.
  • Pan-Indian Confederation (Tecumseh)

    Tecumseh was the leader of the Confederation, which was a political confederacy to ban the Indians together and try to prevent any more Indian land from getting taken from them.
  • Chesapeake-Leopard Affair

    Engagement between American and British ships, in which the British were looking for four of their crew members, all of which were removed. This caused an American outrage and they considered the event humiliating. The British returned the 3 alive crew members and paid for the damages to the Chesapeake. It was a significant engagement in the War of 1812 and shaped the relationship between the United States and Great Britain.
  • Impressment of the sailors

    The British Navy would board American ships and inspect the crew. They would seize the sailors that were accused of "being deserters from British ship." The Americans became angered as their sailors were being taken by the British and their ships were being seized.
  • Battle of Tippercance: Tecumseh

    The Battle of Tippecanoe was when the Prophetstown settlement was burned and the food supply was destroyed. The settlement was established by Tecumseh, an Indian political leader He tried to rebuild his settlement but the war broke out.
  • War of 1812 Begins

    The United States declared war with Great Britain because they refused to stop seizing American ships that were trading with France, Britians enemy.
  • Hartford Convention

    Series of meetings in Hartford, Connecticut where the New England Federalist Party met to discuss grievances about the war. They adopted a strong states rights position and expressed their opinions in a series of resolutions.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The peace treaty that ended the war of 1812 with Britain. It returned all territory and opened the Great Lakes region for American expansion, seen as a U.S. victory.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    The battle between Americans and British after the peace treaty had been signed to end the war. The future president, Jackson, lead the U.S. to victory killing nearly 8,000 British.
