Eisenhower in one of his many speeches said that one Indochina fell to communism then its neighbors would also fall hence create fear that the domino theory will happen. -
Ngo Dinh Diem assassination
Even though Diem was one of the better choices to lead South Vietnam because he was anti communism, he didn't do a really good job and ended up being assasinated which created chaos in South Vietnam. The US reacted quickly too avoid a hostile takeover by the communists. -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident #1
US Maddox was stationed in international waters when they reported that they had been shot apon by 3 NV torpedo boats. The USS Maddox wasn't damaged but 2 of the 3 torpedo boats were. -
Gulf of Tonkin #2
This time 2 US warships were doing patrol sweeps in international water and they called in that NV had attacked them again, bu`t everyone later found out that this was a lie and they just had radar troubles. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Even though the 2nd attack in the Gulf of Tonkin was false, it gave Johnson the chance to seize control and ask the congress for full control of the Vietnam which they allowed. This event then allowed Johnson to send even more troops over to SV. -
Search and destory missions
Since the North Vietnamese began hiding in the woods to avoid the bombing, the US started these search and destroy missions to seek out enemy troops and kill them quickly. -
Operation flaming dart
Johnson ordered a series of reprisal air strikes after several attacks on U.S. bases by Vietcong units. -
Qui Nhơn hotel bombing
After Operation flaming dart, the North Vietnam attacked this hotel that killed 23 U.S. servicemen. This resulted in operation flaming dart 2 -
Operation Rolling Thunder
A 3 year bombing tactic to put pressure on the North Vietnam military. It didn't really work because the enemy hid in the jungles but what it did create or help start was search ad destroy missions. -
Johnson's order of more troops to Vietnam
Johnson saw that they were failing and decideed to act quickly. He called on more troops from 75,000 to 125,000, which means the monthly draft was raised from 17,000 to 35,000. -
Battle of La Drang
The first major battle where the US went up against the North Vietnamese army. At the end, the US had was less casualties while the enemy had about 1000. -
Bombing stops
After telling the media that he will not run again as president, he also informs America that the bombardings in North Vietnam will cease. Little did he know, that since he wasn't running fr presidency, that the next elected president will end the drafts and sendings of troops to Vietnam.
