Unit 2 summative task

  • The Indian act

The Indian act allowed the Canadian government to enfranchise aboriginals of their status without permission. This was a time of decline, the government was not giving the aboriginals the freedom to practice their spiritual beliefs and was striping people of their status.
  • Agnes Macphail

Agnes Macphail was the only woman out of four who ran to win a seat in the House of Commons. This was a time of progress for women. She was the first and only woman to win a seat until 1935. Agnes having won a seat in the House of Commons would benefit women because she would see from their point of view.
  • Potlatch ceremonies

First Nations in British Columbia challenged the government to win back the right to hold potlatches, a ceremony that records events in oral tradition. This event was a decline because it is taking the rights away from aboriginals to hold spirituals ceremonies that are important to their beliefs.
  • Jury duty for women approved

In was in 1922 that women were finally accepted to be selected to be a member of a jury. This was a time of progress. I'm interpretation of this event is that it women's opinions weren't seen as valid until this time.
  • The Chanak Crisis

The Chanak Crisis was the first war that Canada did not automatically support the British Empire in war. When the British asked Canada to sent troops to their aid, Mackenzie King brought the issue to parliament, by the time the House of Commons had come to a decision the crisis the British faced head already passed. I see this as an event of progress, being that Canada did not automatically go to aid the British.
  • Self-determination for aboriginals

Still being an issue, the Six Nations (aboriginals) had gone to the British to request to become Self-determination. However when Britain blocked the Six Nations from expressing their wants. This was a major period of decline for Canada. Not just the fact that the aboriginals did not get to Self-determination but mainly because they would not even listen to the six nations proposal.
  • The halibut treaty

The halibut treaty was the first treaty that was arranged and signed without a British representative present. I see this as an event of progress because it was the first time Canada claimed that they didn't need help from the British saying that they could do it independently and that Britain did not need to step in.
  • Edmonton city council

The Edmonton City Council took a big step towards equality by refusing to support an attempt to ban African Canadians from public parks and swimming pools. This was a time of progress because a major council was in favor of equality for African Canadians which was a big step towards acceptance. This could also in one way be a decline because the citizens of Edmonton were the ones who proposed the idea, so even though the council turned it down, the people were still not accepting.
  • Immigration in Canada

As the economy improved in Canada, they decided to relax their restrictions on immigrants and allowed thousands to enter Canada each month. This was a time of progress, to let thousands of immigrants into Canada was a big step for Canada. This could also be seen as not much of progress not also not a decline seeing as it was only till 1925 that Canada accepted immigrants.
  • Famous Five

Emily Murphy and four other women challenged the prime minister to change the law to state women as ‘person’ in Canada. This was a time of progress, the famous five stood up for women in Canada to be considered ‘persons’ which they weren't until then considered under the title.
  • British Commonwealth

The British Empire officially became the British Commonwealth. Canada and Britain shared an alliance to the British Crown. Canada was equal to Britain and they had the freedom to make their own laws. This was great progress for Canada because they became a free country.
  • Women's equality

It was in 1931 that equal rights measures gave women legal equality with men. This was a very important progress that was made. It simply gave all women the same legal equality that men had.
