The four divisions of the Canadian Corps, fighting together for the first time, attacked the ridge from 9 to 12 April 1917 and captured it from the German army.

    After the war there was a great increase in factory work and in the car and airline industries. The Ford car company thrived during this time. Many families were able to buy cars and help the economy.

    Canadian artists, photographers, cartoonists, and people who took film had more opportunities to share about the war with people at home. Canadians got to see what really was happening in the war. The Canadian artists became more skilled and had more attention from Canadians. They had more opportunities and made more money.

    By the time of 1917 there were almost 700 factories making aircraft, warships and most of the shells fired by British guns. Cities scrambled to meet the demand placed on them to support the war effort. Many people were able to find jobs at the time of the war, but at the end of the war there were not enough jobs for everyone.

    After the war was a time for fun, parties, dancing the Charleston and liquor. It was also a time where there was more organized crime like gangs and the mafia. Liquor became banned during prohibition which made organized crime even worse.

    Women were not allowed to join as soldiers, but did join the Red Cross and work as nurses. They saved many lives and showed their worth in a time when women were seen as fragile. They risked their lives. News of women being brave as nurses made Canadians see the importance and strength of women.

    Lt. Col. Borden sent a letter to kids about telling their older brothers or fathers to come help him in the war. He needed some more soldiers so he was guaranteed to win. But he sent it to the kids so the kids could be inspired to do the same when they grew up. This put a lot of pressure on families.

    The Black Canadian Soldiers were never treated the same as the White soldiers. In 1917 during the Vimy Ridge Jeremiah Jones who was a Black Soldier and he rescued his unit from a enemy machine gun nest in what was to become a battle that is now known as Canada's greatest success and source of great national pride. They were only respected on the battle field.

    Canadians of German, Ukrainian, Austrian, Hungarians, Croatians were treated as spies. This type of prejudiced statement would be shocking to many Canadians today. Back then they called them aliens instead of spies because it meant the same thing as them. Many were put in detention camps and forced to work for the government even when they did nothing wrong.
