    Eugene V. Debs was a political leader serving as a Socialist Presidential candidate 5 times. He was later put in prison because he illegally supported a railway strike. He was important because he was active in the labor movement.

    Jim Crow Laws

    Jim Crow Laws were laws legalizing segregation between blacks and whites. It was important because they were taking a step in the wrong direction in terms of civil rights and discrimination.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    The Chinese Exclusion Act was a federal law that prohibited the immigration of all Chinese laborers. It was important because stopped many from coming to America just for the Gold Rush.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    The sinking of the Lusitania was when the British boat (Lusitania) was torpedoed by the Germans during WW1. This was important because it played a role in the war.

    The Red Scare was a nationwide fear over communist takeover and a socialist revolution. It was important because the nation was frightened, but it brought everyone together.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    The Zimmerman Telegram was a German international communication suggesting a military alliance between Germany and Mexico in the event that the US should enter WW1 opposing Germany. This was important because financial support was being offered.

    The Sedition Act helped to protect the US in WW1. It was important because it was an extension of the Espionage Act of 1917.

    The 18th Amendment made the making and sale of alcohol illegal (Prohibition). It was important because it was supposed to be promoting healthier living.
  • 19th Amendment

    The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. It was important because was taking a step towards gender equality.
  • Immigration Act of 1924

    The Immigration Act of 1924 allowed only a certain number of immigrants into the US. It was important because it gave control to all of the immigration occurring at the time.
  • John Scopes - Monkey Trial

    This case involved the teaching about evolution in public schools, which later resulted in a Tennessee law passed banning the teaching of different views (other than the accepted biblical view) of human evolution. It was important because it's a very controversial subject.
  • 20th Amendment

    The 20th Amendment gives dates for when federal government offices end, as well as who takes the President's place in case he dies. It is important because they things must be worked out before a situation occurs.
  • 21st Amendment

    The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment (Prohibition). It is important because the Prohibition was causing crime.
