    Although bikes had been around for a little while, they didn’t grow quite as popular until later. The bike was a big deal, especially for women. The bike changes women’s rights by changing the clothing and the way they were viewed by many.

    This was the first women’s rights convention held in America. The meeting launched the women’s suffrage movement.

    Matthew perry sails into Tokyo
    Matthew Perry sailed into Tokyo bay with 4 ships. The then demanded to re establish trade between Japan and the western world. This was a big deal because there hadn’t been trade for around 200 years.

    Earl in the morning on April 12,1861, the confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter. In less than 2 days the Union troops surrendered. This event marked the beginning of the civil war.

    On September 17,1862, the battle of Antietam took place. This battle was the single bloodiest day of the whole war. This was general Lee’s first attempt to invade the north

    Little round top
    Little round top was a position of high ground that was held in the battle of Gettysburg by the union forces. The forces defending it were commanded by colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain who is famous for engaging in a downhill bayonet charge to secure the victory. This gave the Union troops momentum to secure the victory and ultimately win the war.

    The 13th amendment was ratified on December 6,1865. This amendment abolished slavery in the United States. The first section declares that “ neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist.”

    William Seward, Secretary of State, struck a deal with Russia. He purchased an extremely large piece of land for $7.2 million. This was known as Alaska. William Seward received a lot of hate a criticism for this.

    The 14th amendment was ratified on July 9,1868. This amendment granted citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States.” This was a very important amendment because it made it to where African Americans were known as citizens.

    The American railroad started at 2 points, Omaha Nebraska and Sacramento California. The each started building the tracks and planned to meet somewhere in the middle. They met at promontory point in Utah in may 10, 1869.

    The 15th amendment was ratified on February 3,1870. This amendment was very important because it granted the right to vote for all men over the age of 21 including black men. At this time it was just men that could vote, women would not be able to vote for some time after.

    The Statue of Liberty was designed and gifted to America by the French. The man credited with all of this is Fredrick Bartholdi. It was given to commemorating the alliance we had during the American revolution

    On March 1,1875 the movement for equal treatment of African Americans in public was passed. This civil rights movement prohibited racial discrimination in public spaces.
  • Brooklyn bridge is completed

    Brooklyn bridge is completed
    One of the greatest early accomplishments during urban life in the late 1900s was the invention of the suspension bridge. This was a bridge held up bu cables on either side rather than supports in the middle. John Roebling created the remarkable masterpiece know as the Brooklyn bridge. This was a big deal because it was the largest suspension bridge built up til that time.

    The Sioux Indians practiced a “ghost dance” in an attempt to please the gods and ask for forgiveness. The reservation police showed up to arrest the Sioux leader Sitting Bull. But he was mistaken for a ghost dancer and was killed in the process

    Wounded knee massacre
    Wounded knee was the final battle between the confederate and Sioux tribe. This massacre left over 150 natives dead and 23 American soldiers dead. This massacre ended the ghost dance movement

    Ellis island opened on January 1, 1892. This became one of the biggest destinations for European immigrants coming to the United States. 17 year old Annie Moore was the first person to pass through Ellis island

    On September 18,1995 Booker T. Washington delivered a remarkable speech directed towards African American people, encouraging them. He encouraged them to stay strong through the oppression they were going through. Although the civil right act was passed it did not fix the racial injustice that continued to take place.

    This court case was basically what made racism legal. In this court case the court came to the conclusion that African Americans were separate but equal. Although this would seem like a good thing, it caused lots of racial injustice in the future

    Tensions were already tight with the Spanish and American people. But when the Main, a ship harbored in Havana,Cuba exploded and over 250 people were killed, the Americans were quick to declare war.

    The battle of Manila bay was the first real battle between the two sides. Commanded by George Dewey the American naval fleet destroyed the Spanish troops. This battle took place in the Philippines.

    “On July 12, 1898, the Joint Resolution passed and the Hawaiian islands were officially annexed by the United States. The Hawaiian islands had a well-established culture and long history of self-governance when Captain James Cook, the first European explorer to set foot on Hawaii, landed in 1778.”

    “The Treaty of Paris is ratified by the U.S. Senate.
    Under the treaty, the U.S. acquires control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.”

    Teddy Roosevelt’s becomes elected as the 26th president of the untied states. He received the medal of honor while he served for the United States. He helped to break up monopolies as president.

    Ida M. Tarbell published “The history of the standard oil company.” This was a series of multiple investigative reports on the unethical business practices from one of the country’s largest trusts.
  • Angel island opens

    Angel island opened on January 21, 1910. This island was set up on the west side and immigrants had to pass through to get into San Francisco. The immigrants passing through were mostly Asian.

    Arch duke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was shot and killed. This was considered the start of ww1 for Europe. After this war broke out.

    The Lusitania, a neutral passenger ship was sunk by German submarines. This was unheard of because it was a very dishonorable thing to do. The ship also had many American passengers on board. This led to America getting involved

    Lucy Burns was the first to take up position outside the White House in an attempt to bring attention to women’s rights. More women joined in and regardless of the weather the women were there 6 days a week.

    Cease fire was called on November 11,1918. Germany surrendered, with the US joining the war it made the war end much quicker because of fresh troops and supplies.

    The 19th amendment is passed
    The 19th amendment stated that all people regardless of gender could vote. In other words, women were now allowed to vote along with men.

    The Ku Klux Klan was revived in the 20s. They had a goal to become a sight of publicity. Reigns of terror haunted cities and towns and stayed for unknown amounts of time. This clan was very dangerous and looking to cause trouble.

    This was an international organization founded after the Paris peace conference. The goals were to prevent war through collective security. Negotiation rather than war.

    On this day the stock market crashed. This sent everyone into a panic, trying to get money out of the bank and keep what they had. Many people lost money that was in the bank. Some consider this the start of the Great Depression.

    This “deal” dealt with the stock market and how to prevent it from crashing again in the future and to help people who lost large amounts of money in the bank.

    The Hoover dam was built back during the Great Depression. This dam is extremely helpful to farmers and people in the nearby area. Farmers are able to irrigate crops much easier.

    The large blimp know pan as the Hindenburg caught fire and exploded in New Jersey. The aircraft was attempting to land when this occurred. This was a passenger airship.
