    Britiain was attacking American trade ships and kidnapping and impressing the sailors (forcing them to work as soldiers) because they were at war with France (the Napolenic Wars) and they didn't want us to be trading with France.

    The battle of lake Erie was won by the U.S. It made it so we controlled the northwestern territory, which gave a lot more land to the U.S.
  • Britain burns D.C.

    Britain burns D.C.
    On the 24th of August, Britain burned the capital after they defeated us at the battle of Bladensburg. Our capital has never been captured since.
  • Battle at Fort McHenry in Baltimore

    Battle at Fort McHenry in Baltimore
    This was more of a siege than a battle. The Fort was under bombardment from the British navy for 25 hours. The British eventually left and a flag was raised. Seeing the flag and the fort still standing inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner, which later became our national anthem.

    The treaty of Ghent was signed but not ratified. Britain did not know that peace was being established, so there were more battles.

    This was the last major battle of the war. It was won by commander Andrew Jackson, who later became president. The treaty of ghent had already been signed, but the British were unaware that peace was trying to be established.
