    They arrived in the Valley of Mexico, a wide plain with fertile land, plentiful water, and a mild climate. But there was already people there living in a city made of stone. The only land that was free was a swampy island at one end of a broad lake. There they saw the eagle sitting on a cactus. They called their new city Tenochtitlan.
