The Law took the latifundias which owned by the wealthy and then hand them over to the peasants. However, it was never implemented on a large scale, because compensating the landowners was complicated and expensive. Finally, the law angered the landowners and disappointed the peasants. -

The revolt on 17th July 1936
The military had a perfect excuse to make their move because of Calvo Sotelo was assassinated by Republican police. A group of officers attempted to overthrow the democratic government in a military coup.The coup was launched on 17 and 18 July. However, it failed to take complete control of the country and civil war ensued.
