    While the northern and southern politicians had heated debates over the growth of slavery, Henry Clay known as the Great Compromiser settles it. The Missouri Compromise was created afterwards. The Missouri Compromise were a series of laws that helped maintain the balance between slave states and free states
  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis
    During the passing of tariffs, Southern states felt that tariffs were unfair and only supported the North. John C. Calhoun said any state could nullify a federal lawit consider unconstitutional. The federal government denied South Carolina's argument, they threatened to secede. Henry Clay came up with a compromise and lowered the tariff.

    Compromise of 1850
    Congress had many heated debates as to wether the new territiories won from Mexico would be admitted as slave or free states. Henry Clay made a compromise that California would be admitted as a free states and Congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories.

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850 by the Congress. The act permitted the capture of African Americans who had fled to the north to escape bondage. These laws heightnened tension, and set the stage for John Brown's Raid and the American Civil War.
  • Bleeding Kansas 1855

    Bleeding Kansas 1855
    5000 people from nearby proslavery Missouri came and voted for proslavery representatives in Kansas illegally. Antislavery opponents started their own government since proslavery already did. The antislavery government was attacked by proslavery forces. To avenge this attack, extreme abolitionist John Brown murdered several of his proslavery neighbors.

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott first went to trial to sur for his freedom in 1847. Ten years later, the case was put into the US Supreme Court. The court decided that slaves could never become citizens of the US and therefore could not sue in federal court. And that the federal government did not have the power to prohibit slavery in territories. The decesion of the court stated that because Dred was black he was not a citizen so he could not sue, and that the Missouri Compromise was onconstitutional.

    Attack On Harpers Ferry 1859
    John Brown wanted to insprie slaves to fight for their freedom. He planned to capture the arsenal in Virginia to arm the slaves. Brown and his men were captured. Abolitionists saluted John Brown as he was put to death, the issue of slavery had raised tensions in America to the breaking point.

    Abraham Lincoln wins the election. Southern states begin to secede from the Union shortly after Lincoln is elected because, the southerners didnt trust him.
