Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, five years after the start of the first great World War and after six months of negotiation at the Paris Peace Conference. -
The Hayes Society.
Between 1920and 1930 there existed an organization known as the Hayes Society which held considerable influence over London and other Counties. The Hayes Society only admitted butlers 'of the very first rank,' and had several criteria for membership. -
Miss Kenton and Stevens' father arrivals at Darlington Hall
During the spring of 1922, Miss Kenton and Stevens' father arrived at Darlington Hall. Miss Kenton as a housekeeper, and Stevens' father as a under-butler. -
Conference of 1923
The conference took place at Darlington Hall in March 1923, partly because of Lord Darlington's friendship with Herr Bremann, an officer in the German army during World War I.This Conference was held to revise the Treaty of Versailles.
This night, Stevens' father passed away. -
No Jews staff at Darlington Hall.
Two housemaids-Ruth and Sarah- who have been members of Stevens' staff for over six years at that time, had were fired. The maids have been perfectly satisfactory employees. Lord Darlington asked Stevens to fire them. They could not have Jews on the staff. -
Miss Kenton's departure.
Miss Kenton left Darlington Hall in 1936 to get married. -
Second World War
The war is generally accepted to have begun on 1 September 1939, with the invasion of Poland by Germany, and subsequent declarations of war on Germany by France and most of the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth. The war ended with the total victory of the Allies over Germany and Japan in 1945. -
