  • Wilmont Proviso

    This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party
  • Compromise of 1850

    Kept the nation together by allowing California to be admitted as a free state, slave trade in Washington D.C. ended, New Mexico and Utah became open to slavery, and fugitive slave laws would be passed.
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

    Got rid of the Missouri Compromise by allowing people to vote for slavery in territories where the Missouri Compromise had banned it.
  • " Bleeding Kansas "

    A proslavery mob attacked the town of Lawrence, Kansas in May. Civil war broke out in Kansas as the news of the Pottowatomie Massacre spread.
  • Caning of Sumner

    Senator Charles Sumnor was the Massachusetts respresenattive. He wrote a very inspiring speech about antislavery. This speech affected many people in different ways. When Sumnor read the speech to the other senators, Senator Preston Brooks beat him up.
  • Dred Scott vs Standford

    Sued for his freedom after his owner's death. In court, he argued that he was free because his owner to him to territories where slavery was illegal. He wasn't able to sue for his freedom because he wasn't a U.S. citizen.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown wanted t inspire slaves to fight for their freedom. He sent out the word to rally the slaves to fight at Harpers Ferry,but no one came. When John Brown was captured, he said that next time there is a rebellion it would be the Southener's blood that would be spilled. That feared the Southeners by a great deal.

    The United States presidental election of 1860 was the laststraw before the Civil War. The nation had been divided throughout most of the 1850s on questions of states rights and slavery in the territories. In 1860, Southern and Northern factions and bringing Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party to power without the support of any Southern state.When Abraham Lincoln won the election, Southeners became very upset.
