    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 pleased the North by admitting California to be a free state and slave trade would be abolished in D.C.. But for the South, no laws had changed and slavery in territories won from Mexico and Congress would pass stronger laws to help slaveholders to recapture runaway slaves. Senatar A. Douglas secceds in winning passage of plan. Some even believed it would save the union. Senator Henry Clay proposes the Compromise of 1850.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Stephan A. Douglas had drafted the bills for governing the Nebraska Territory. The Nebraska Act divides their territory into two; Nebraska and Kansas. The Act allowed slavery to be decided by residents to vote. South had supported the bill since they had the most votes. Because of that, it became a law. The Act slavery had to be allowed in areas where the Missouri Compromise banned it.

    Bleeding Kansas
    The pro and anti-slavery settlers rush into Kansas Territory to vote for legislation. There were more Proslavery at the time than Antislavery. Illegally, there was about 5,000 Proslavery missourian votes in election. Antislavery settlers boycott official government and formed their own government. Proslavery officially attacks Lawrence. John Brown retaliates by murdering five Proslavery people. Finally, Civil breaks out in Kansas territory called "Bleeding Kansas".

    Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusettes delivered a speech attacking the proslavery forces in Kansas. His speech humiliated A.D Butler. Preston Brooks, who was a relative of Butler attacked Sumner in the Senate. The Southerners cheered Preston's defense of the South.

    Dread Scott v. Sandford
    Dread Scptt was a slave in Missouri, finding a way to have his freedom. He tried to sue for freedom. Cheif Justice Roger B. Taney ruled against scott because he was a slave and he wasn't a U.S. Citizen either. His case was a result in allowing slavery to spread in territories.

    Attack on Harpes Ferry
    John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for freedom. He planned to capture all the weapons of the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Fery, Virginia. No slaves had joined him but Brown thought he was a great help. The reason they didn't join Brown was that they were afraid of their masters. Slaves thought their masters would punish them but the North praised John's idea but the South on the other hang was angery at the North's reaction.

    Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln wins the Election of 1860 because he received the most electoral votes. As a result of this election South Carolina and then 6 other Southern States decide to secede from the Union. Soon after they form the Confederate States of America.
