Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling is a memoir of her life. The main character in this book is Mindy Kaling. It is set in mostly Dartmouth University, New York, and Los Angeles. I bought this book because I knew Mindy Kaling was hilarious and I love comedy. This is not part of a book series. I starts by talking about her childhood and the friendships she had. It then moved on to going to college and moving to New York. At the end, I talks mainly about writing. -
Event 1 Befriending Mavis
In ninth grade, Mindy made a new friend named Mavis Lehrman. At the beginning of their friendship, they would always hang out together on weekends. Every Saturday they watch TV, specifically The Daily Show, Saturday NIght Live, and The Colbert Report. After awhile Mindy and Mavis starting drifting away from their other friend groups which made them able to hang out more. This is important because she found someone that inspired her to become the actress and comedian she is today. -
Event 2 Mindy Goes to Dartmouth
Mindy began her college career at Dartmouth University. She participated in many activities while she was there. As she said, "I was freakin' Jaws in a community swimming pool." because she wrote plays, acted, sang, and was the student newspaper cartoonist. I feel I won't do anything like that in college. She got many other students attention because she did so much. This is important because that is where she participated in many activities to better understand what she wanted to do in life. -
Event 3 Meets her 2 Bestfriends
While attending Dartmouth University, Mindy met her 2 bestfriends. All three of them have been very close even after she found fame. Their names were Brenda and Jocelyn. All three of them met through their singing group at school. Mindy and Brenda met first and bonded through their similar sense of humor and the same Drama Department foes. I want bestfriends like Brenda and Jocelyn. This is significant because Brenda and Jocelyn helped her succeed in the comedy industry. -
Event 5 Interning
As a sophomore in college Mindy was and intern at Late Night With Conan O'Brien. She said she was probably one of the worst interns they ever hired. This is because she would just use her internship to get close to Conan. I think this is something I would definitely do. Her boss hated her because she was bad at the job and her boss was really mean. This is important because Conan was one of her favorite comedian and late night host. -
Event 6 Moving to New York
Mindy accompinied by her two bestfriend moved to New York. They lived in a tiny apartment and none of them had jobs to pay the rent. They lived on the third story of a cheap 2 bedroom apartment building. Mindy did many auditions, but she usually did not get the parts. She decided she needed some money, she started babysitting a wealthy family's children. This is significant because the needing of money made her and Brenda work harder on their play called
Matt & Ben. -
Event 7 Matt & Ben
Brenda and Mindy decided they were not being creative enough in New York, they decided to write something and perform in it as well. Their play was called Matt & Ben because Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were huge parts of their life. I can relate because I'm huge fan of both Matt and Ben. Everyone wanted to see these two women dressed up as men, so they even got invited to film festivals. I couldn´t believe how well the play did. This is important because this was the first script she ever wrote. -
Event 8 Moving
Mindy Kaling moved to California from New York during a writers' because there was nothing else for her to do. She lived right next to The Grove, a huge outdoor mall, in Los Angeles. She wanted a place where it was easy to work from home. She says her new apartment made it easier to write funny content. think I would make better content at home because it is easier to focas. This is important because her work for The Office was positivly effected by her moving. -
Event 9 Writing for The Office
MIndy Khaling began writing for The Office when she moved to Los Angeles. Along with being a writer, she was also a producer. Mindy always had opportunities to write for Kelly more, as a writer and producer she had to overlook the set. I thought this showed how unselfish and professional she is. It is harder to overlook the set when your acting in it she said. This is important because The Office is a huge part of her life and is what she is best known for. -
Event 10 Saturday Night Live
In between the second and third season of The Office Mindy made her way back to New York to write for SNL. Michael Shur used to work there and got her in through Mike Shoemaker, a producer at SNL. She shared a small office with Kristen Wiig which she was excited about, Additionally, she talks about how close she got to Amy Poehler. I'm jealous because it'd be cool to get close to someone like Amy. This is important because she learned more about writing in a different work environment. -
Reflection
The book I read was overall a pretty good book. I found the book to be quite funny and at many certain times, relatable. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in comedy and people looking for a good laugh. I am going to read Mindy Kaling's other books now hoping they are as good as this one. The only thing I wish would be different is that she should stop body shaming herself. Overall, I was a really good book and I would recommend it to others.
