  • Jayavarman II founds the Khmer Empire

    Jayavarman II founds the Khmer Empire
    Founder of the Khmer empire of Cambodia (r.802-50). He was a vassal ruler in the Angkor district in about 800, under an unknown Javanese or Sumatran dynasty. In 802 he declared independence, proclaiming himself devaraja (god-king), so establishing the Khmer monarchy on a theocratic basis.

  • Harshavarman I reigns

    He reigns of Harshavarman and his younger brother marked a period of instability for the Khmer Empire. Both brothers were involved in a power struggle with their maternal uncle, Jayavarman IV, a conflict that lasted for Harshavarman’s entire reign. Jayavarman was eventually driven out of Angkor to set up his own capital about 100 km away during the reign of Ishanavarman.
