The History of Microsoft Windows

  • Windows 1.0

    Windows 1.0
    This was the first offical version of windows and was not an actual operating system, but an extension of MS-DOS. There was nothing special or great about this new operating system, it only had very simple applications that could be used such as a clock, notepad,calculator, computer terminal, Windows Write, Windows paint, and a control panel.
  • Windows 2.0

    Windows 2.0
    This version of windows was an extension of Windows 1.0 and was upgraded with Excel and Word for Microsoft, It also had the ability to run with more memory when Windows 1.0.
  • Windows 3.0

    Windows 3.0
    With this edition it was easier and the software was able to allow the user to multitask. This version was compatible with almost all Intel processors.
  • Windows 3.1

    Windows 3.1
    This version was upgraded with "TrueType", a scalable font. And also added more multimedia support. Off of this version, Windows for Workgroups was made and Windows 3.11 which contained the updates for Windows 3.1 after it was released.
  • Windows 95

    Windows 95
    This was the first consumer oriented version of Windows. Windows 95 was no compatible with any cheap, non-microsoft DOS. Micorsoft came out with 5 different versions of Windows 95: Windows 95- original, Windows 95 A- Incoperated Windows 95 OSR1 slipstreamed, Windows 95 B- The inclusion of Internet Explorer 3.0 and FAT 32 Fire support, Windows 95 B USB- Included USB support, Windows 95 C- Internet explorer 4.0.
  • Windows NT 4.0

    Windows NT 4.0
    Windows NT 4.0 is the newer versions of Widnows NT 3.51(1995) and Windows NT 3.5(1994). Windows NT 4.0 came in four versions: Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows NT 4.0 Server, Windows NT 4.0 Server, Enterprise Edition, and Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Support.
  • Windows 98

    Windows 98
    This version had new hardware drivers and FAT32 file system support. This one also had USB support. In 1999, Microsoft released a second edition of Windows 98 which had the deature of "Internet Connection Sharing" which allowed multiple computers on to one (LAN) Local Area Network.
  • Windows 2000

    This verison if Windows is the successor of Windows NT 4.0. This version included "Microsoft Managment Console" and " System Administration" applictations. There were four versions of windows 2000, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and Windows 2000 Datacenter Sever,
  • Windows Millennium Edition (ME)

    Windows Millennium Edition (ME)
    This was the last DOS based operating system for Microsoft. In this edition Windows released "Windows Movie Maker" which was a multimedia-editing appliction. It has Internet Explorer 5.5 and Windows Media Player 7. And this was the first version of windows ever to release a "System Restore" Which allowed users to restore windows files and documents back to a previous date and time.
  • Windows XP

    This version of Windows is comprised of Windows Nt/2000 and Windows 95/98/(ME). Windows XP used Windows NT 5.1 Kernel. Windows XP has many versions such as, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Media Edition, Windows XP tablet PC edition, Windows XP embedded, Windows XP starter edition, Windows XP professional x64 edition, Windows XP 64-bit edition.
  • Windows Server 2003

    This version of windows has many new security features. It also has a "Manage your Server" application that lets you configure your machine for certain roles/jobs. There are six editions to this version and they are: Web Edition(32-bit), Standard Edition(32 and 64-bit), Enterprise Edition(32 and 64-bit), Datacenter Edition(32 and 64-bit), Small Business Server(32-bit), Storage Server(OEM Channel Only).

    In this Version of Microsoft, Microsoft released Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003, x64 Editions in Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter SKUs.
  • Windows Vista

    Windows Vista
    This version had advanced security with a new restricted user mode. The start button was replaced with just the Windows icon, which was a major difference from all the previous versions of Windows. Vista had new features of new graphics, the Windows Aero GUI, new applications such as, Windows Calendar, Windows DVD Maker, some new games such as Chess, Mahjong, and Purble Place. Also Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, and alot of other unmentioned changes.
  • Windows Home Server

    This version was based on Windows 2003, and was configured and monitored using a console program that was installed on the PC. Some things they could do were media Sharing, local and remote drive backup and file duplication.
