  • NATO and the Warsaw Pact

    NATO and the Warsaw Pact
    In 1949 the U.S, Canada, and ten other countries formed a new military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In 1955 the Soviet Union responded by forming their own military alliance, the Warsaw Pact. The pact included the Soviet Union, and seven satellites in Eastern Europe. Unlike NATO, the Warsaw Pact was often invoked by the Soviets to keep its satellites in order. It cemented the division of Europe into Eastern and Western Blocs.

    Nuclear Arms Race and Detente

    In 1969, the U.S. and the Soviet Union began Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) to limit nuclear weapons. In 1972 and 1979 both sides signed agreements setting these limits. In 1980s, Ronald Reagan created a program to build a “Star Wars” missile defense against nuclear attack. Then both sides agreed to limit weapons, then this led to a detente in 1970s. The detente ended in 1979.

    Kim Sung II and Syngman Rhee both wanted to be the ruler over the entire country. In 1950, North Korean troops attacked and overran most of the south.

    missile crisis Cuba goes communist and the Cuban missile spark a crisis. The Soviet Union sent missiles to Cuba and they responded by imposing a naval blockade. John F. Kennedy demanded that the Soviet Union remvoes their nuclear missiles from Cuba.

    Vietnam Conflict

    After 1954 the Vietnamese became a part of the Cold War. Vietnam was split into two parts, North Communist and South Non-Communist which was supported by the U.S. In 1964 South Vietnamese raided North Vietnamese. Later, North Vietnamese then attacked a U.S. navy destroyer. The U.S. started bombing North Vietnam and later that year the U.S. sent troops to war. In 1976 Vietnam was a communist country.

    Soviet Union Falls
    Stalin forced labor camps with "enemies of the state." Soviets were given freedom of speech and and the government freed them from prison and labor camps. In 1956 Hungarians wanted to be independent of Soviet control but Khrushchev sent tanks in to enforce obedience and did not allow them to break free.

    Mao urged young Chinese to experience revolution firsthand. The Chinese fought a war against Nationalists headed by Jiang Jieshi.

    Berlin Wall

    berlin wall The city of Berlin was split into democratic West Berlin, and communist East Berlin. Low-paid East Germans were unhappy with communism so they fled into West Berlin. The Berlin wall was built in 1961 to stop the flight. When the wall was finished it was topped with barbed wire and patrolled by guards. By November 1989, the wall fell.

    Soviets in Afghanistan

    sovietsA Soviet-supported Afghan government had tried to modernize the nation. Armed men or warlords took up arms against the government and the Soviet troops moved in.They battled mujahedins and this was not easy for them. By the 1980s the American government took a chance and began to smuggle weapons into the mujahedin. Soviets didn't have alot of success and many casualties.
  • Eastern European Independence

    Eastern European Independence
    Eastern Europeans began to seek more freedom in their own countries.Europeans were opposed to communist rule. Revolts had erupted in many European countries.Later Gorbachev declared he would not interfere with Eastern European reforms. Vaclav Havel was elected president. In east Germany the gates to the Berlin wall was opened and the country started down the road to reunification with west Germany. When Nicolae Ceausescu refused to step down he was overthrown and executed. Europeans were free.
