  • Yalta Conference

    A conference was held called the 'Yalta Conference' and the U.S, Great Britain and the Soviet Union was there to discuss the issues they were having.

  • Russia enters war against Japan

  • Truman declares active role in Greek Civil War

    The Greek Civil War was fought from 1944 to 1949 between a government backed by British and American support and Greek Communists. American intervention resulted in the Truman Doctrine, the U.S. policy of aiding nations defending themselves against Communist forces.

  • Lead Up

    Incipient conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States began at the peace-time conferences. Their conflict was intensified after President Truman declared the Truman Doctrine and launched the Marshall Plan in 1947.

  • 1948: June 24 -- Berlin Blockade begins

    The city of Berlin became a centerpiece of the Cold War, playing a particularly significant role in Europe. East met West in this divided city where the Berlin wall was a tangible symbol of the "Iron Curtain."

  • 1949: July -- NATO ratified

    After World War II the countries of Western Europe found themselves too weak politically and militarily to prevent the spread of the communist "iron curtain" on a national level. The alliance of France and the United Kingdom through the Brussels Treaty was found to be minuscule when compared to the Communist Soviet Union. Very little time passed before this weakness was realized and Western Europe turned to a more inclusive North Atlantic Treaty

  • 1950: June -- Korean War begins

    For quite some time Korea has been taken advantage of by other nations. In 1910 the country was annexed by Japan, and was heavily exploited for its agricultural and mineral wealth. When Japan decided to invade China, the Japanese forced Koreans to work in labor camps to supply the Japanese with war goods. By the end of World War II, 4 million Koreans had been forced into labor.

  • 1953: July -- Korean War ends

  • 1954: March -- KGB established

    The KGB was the security agency of the Soviet Union government which was involved in nearly all aspects of life in the Soviet Union since March 1954.

  • 1954: July -- Vietnam split at 17th parallel

    The Vietnam War, the first televised war, pitted South Vietnam and the United States against Communist North Vietnam. It was feared that the fall of South Vietnam would lead to the fall of other South East Asian nations to Communism as well, in what was known as the "Domino Effect."

  • 1957: October 4 -- Sputnik launched into orbit

    During the Cold War, both the United States and the Soviet Union endeavored to demonstrate their power. The space race served as an opportunity for the two nations to showcase their scientific and technological capabilities. Amidst propoganda, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. competed for superiority in space as they constantly tried to top each other.

  • 1960: May -- Soviet Union reveals that U.S. spy plane was shot down over Soviet territory

  • 1961: April -- Bay of Pigs invasion

    During the 1960s, relations between Cuba and the United States were not as amicable as they could have been. The United States felt threatened because Cuba was the only country in the Western hemisphere to adopt the ideas of communism.

  • 962: -- U.S. involvement in Vietnam increased
