Thank You Mr. Falker

  • Knowledge is sweet

Trisha's grandpa put honey on a book and had her taste it. Trisha's grandma asked how it tasted and she said sweet! Then her family said yes and so is knowledge which told Trisha she was going to learn to read soon.
  • Kindergarten

Trisha went to kindergarten where she hoped to learn to read. Others in her class began learning, but not Trisha. She was good at drawing and hoped to learn to read in 1st grade.
  • 1st grade

Trisha went to the 1st grade and began to feel different because she still could not read. Trisha asked her grandma is she thought she was smart and her grandma said she is the smartest. This made Trisha feel better.
  • From Michigan to California

Trisha's grandparents died and school seemed harder without them. Then Trisha and her family moved to California where her mom had gotten a teaching job.
  • Trisha's New School

The kids at Trisha's new school picked on her and called her names for not being able to read in the 3rd grade. This made Trisha want to go to school even less so she would make up excuses to try and get out of going.
  • Mr. Falker Comes To School

Trisha started 5th grade and there was a new teacher, Mr. Falker. Mr. Falker would tell her how brilliant and talented she was when he would see her drawing. Mr. Falker would also stand up for Trisha and make the other kids stop making fun of and laughing at her. All the kids stopped teasing her except Eric. Trisha was only happy when she was with Mr. Falker.
  • Mr. Falker Sees Eric Bullying Trisha

Eric's bullying got to be so bad, Trisha would go to the bathroom before recess and hide under the stairwell where she felt safe until recess was over. One day Eric followed her and pulled her into the hall and started making fun of her. Mr. Falker saw this happening and took Eric to the office and told Trisha she would not have to worry about Eric anymore
  • Mr. Falker Promises Trisha She Will Read

Mr. Falker called out letters and numbers and had trisha draw them on the board with a wet sponge. When he stopped, none of the letters or numbers looked like they were supposed to and Trisha began to cry. Mr. Falker promised Trisha she will read.
  • Trisha Practices Her Letters And Numbers

Trisha met with Mr. Falker and Miss Plessy, a reading teacher, almost every day after school to work on writing and recognizing letters and numbers. She slowly began to be able to read words.
  • Trisha Reads!

One day Mr. Falker put a book in front Trisha and pointed out a paragraph. Trisha began to read words and then sentences until she had read the whole paragraph. That night Trisha ran home and got out the honey and put it on the same book her grandfather had years before and was so happy she began to cry.
