Technology Use Progression

  • Quicksort Algorithm

    Quicksort Algorithm
Tony Hoare, also known as C.A.R. Hoare, developed the Quicksort Algorithm that would soon be known to be one of the most widely used sorting algorithms in the world.
  • Card Random Access Memory (CRAM)

    Card Random Access Memory (CRAM)
Invented and used by NCR mainframes, CRAM was used for secondary storage. Mylar cards were suspended on rods, and one at a time were dropped and processed. CRAM only recorded about 5.5 MB on it 256 cards.
  • CDC Supercomputer

    CDC Supercomputer
The CDC (Control Data Corporation) 6600 processed over 3 million instructions each second. In 1962, this was known to be the fastest computer of the time.
  • Carterfone

    Carterfone
The carterfone, invented by Thomas Carter, connected mobile radios to the telephone network.
  • Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC)

    Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC)
The AGC, designed by scientists and engineers at MIT’s Instrumentation Laboratory, was used to decrease the size of the Apollo spacecraft computer significantly. This computer went from weight of 7 refrigerators, to a device that only weighed 70 pounds.
