Brothers John and Thomas Knoll. Originally created as an image editing program in the late 1980's and used for editing a scene in the film, The Abyss. Adobe Systems bought a license for distribution and released the product in early 1990, becoming the most popular software program ever published by the company. -
PowerBook laptop series is introduced
After redesigning their line of portable computers, Apple introduced the PowerBook series in 3 tiers of machines. These laptops had a built-in trackball, internal floppy drive and palm rests. The PowerBook series influenced the typical design for laptops going forward in the 1990's. -
SSD Module Prototype
SunDisk, now known as SanDisk, create a prototype solid state disk module for IBM to evaluate. Their module featured non-volatile memory chips called flash memory which offered a smaller, lighter and more powerful option than the previous hard disk drives. -
Java 1.0 is introduced
Following the Oak programming language created by James Gosling in 1991, Sun Microsystems created Java, which offered users independence from the large software vendors (Microsoft, Apple) and allowed a program to run on any system. Their platform was "Write Once, Run Anywhere". -
JavaScript is developed
Brendan Eich at Netscape Communications. Entirely separate from the Java programming language, JavaScript was an object-based scripting language used across the internet on both client and server sides. -
DMCA becomes law
U.S. Congress passes The Digital Millennium Copyright Act which has become influential worldwide. The use of the internet was continuing to become more popular which led to many direct violations of copyright law. This new law further defined the punishment for such violations and made it illegal to create programs to circumvent it.
