    DISCOVERY FOR THE SPANISH
    It began with the entry of the Spaniards in 1537, by the north of our region from Chachapoyas to Moyabamba. It was Hernando de Alvarado, brother of the conqueror Alonso de Alvarado, with the support of cacique Huamán, who managed to dominate the natives of the area. Alonso de Mecadillo burst through this valley heading towards the mountains of Aypena, passed to the Marañón and to Amazonas, arriving at the native town of Machifalo, where he found gold and wealth.

    on October 10, 1656. Tarapoto was the headquarters for the realization of this conquest. From that brutal and heroic stage the oral tradition that refers to the remote origin of our city has been preserved.

    THE EXIT OF THE JURISDICTION OF QUITO (COLONIZATION)
    Our city was under the jurisdiction of the audience of Quito for 63 years until the King of Spain, Carlos IV, on July 15, 1802, who ordered through the royal decree, the return of the ceded territories. The reports of the governor of the general command of Maynas, Don Francisco de Requena, had exercised an admirable political power capable of changing the political and administrative system of the Viceroyalty of New Granada.

    In the year 1769, the king of Spain ordered the viceroy Amat and Junet, to expel the Jesuits from Peru and, consequently, from the Peruvian Amazon. This caused certain havoc in the grouped native organizations, as the reductions of the same, that disrupted the life and the customs, producing confusion and destruction of the native identity.

    It was founded on August 20, 1782 by the Spanish bishop Baltasar Jaime Martínez Compañón. Its effective beginnings date from the explorations carried out by the Pocras and Hanan Chancas (ancient cultures of the Ayacucho region)

    TARAPOTO NOWADAYS
    Currently Tarapoto has a population of 149,875 inhabitants (2015, INEI), being the most populated city of the department of San Martín. In the metropolitan area of the city, the largest urban population concentration of the San Martín region (28.57%) is located, and there are two zones with their own characteristics: The urban area and the marginal urban zone (Tarapoto, Morales and La Banda de Shilcayo).
