  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas

Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas
It is one of the most influential cases for education because not only did it end segregation in schools, but also got the ball rolling on getting kids who have special needs their right to a free education. For example Gariulo and Bouck (2018) said "Used as a precedent for arguing that children with disabilities cannot be excluded from a public education"(Pg.43). This shows that the case gave special needs kids and families a voice to fight for their educational rights.
  • Section 504 of Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Section 504 of Rehabilitation Act of 1973
This law is a civil rights law that was created to stop discrimination of against people with disabilities. For example Gargiulo and Bouck state "It said that no individual can be excluded, solely because of his or her disability, from participating in or benefiting from any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance, which includes schools" (p.52). This law was important because it helped people with disabilities by giving them the resources they need with
    no cost.
  • Public Law 94-142

    Public Law 94-142
This law was extremely important because it gave kids with disabilities the right to a free appropriate education. When talking about the law The US Department of Education (2010) states "to assure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate education which emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs" (p.1). Meaning we need to help them in what ever way possible to get the best education possible.
  • Public Law 99-457

    Public Law 99-457
The law was created to add new components to Public Law 94-142. According to Gargiulo and Bouck(2018) "Mandated Services for preschoolers with disabilities, ages 3-5"(p.47). They realized the faster we can help children with disabilities they better it will be for them in the long run. They wouldn't have as much catching up to do. Garigiulo and Bouck(2018) also said "The law permitted early intervention for infants and toddlers"(p.47). This law will help the kids to not have a gap in education.
  • Public Law 101-336 (Americans With Disabilities Act)

Public Law 101-336 (Americans With Disabilities Act)
This is a pivotal law that helps many with disabilities by making it illegal to discriminate against people with disabilities. An example Gargiulo and Bouck(2018) say "This far reaching enactment, which parallels Section 504 of PL 93-112, forbids discrimination against people and in both public and private sectors" (p.54). Which means they can't be judge in the work force, they also have to have accommodations on public transports, restaurants, movies etc. Treated with respect like anyone else.
  • Public Law 101-476

    Public Law 101-476
This law was created more services for children with disabilities. For example some of things it helped with Gargiulo and Bouck (2018) said is "Autism and traumatic brain injury identified as discrete disability categories, rehabilitation counseling and social work considered related services and established the requirement of a individual transition plan (ITP) by age 16" (p.47). It also did a few other stuff as well. But this act aided in helping more children with disabilities.
  • No child left behind act

    No child left behind act
This law was created to make accountability better in education. wanting students and teachers to improve. According to Gargiulo and Bouck (2018) " A Brief synopsis of this ambitious law reveals that eventually all pupils, including those in special education, are expected to demonstrate proficiency in mathematics, reading and science " (p.48). They believe if students with disabilities get all the tools they need and the most normal classroom setting they should do well on the test.
  • Individuals with disabilities Education Improvement Act 2004

Individuals with disabilities Education Improvement Act 2004
This new act according to what NYSED.gov (2015) said is" President Bush signed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, which reauthorized the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), on December 3, 2004"(p.1). This act is just a newer version of the old act, which want parents, students and teachers to be more accountable in education.
  • Public Law 110-325 the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments of 2008

Public Law 110-325 the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments of 2008
This law was important because it ended up helping more people with disabilities by making the criteria wider. For example Gargiulo and Bouck (2018) state "commonly called ADAA, this legislation revises the definition of a disability in favor of a broader interpretation, thereby extending protections to greater numbers of individuals" (p.55). That way a lot of people under this law who have issues with everyday tasks can get the help they need to succeed.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act 2015

    Every Student Succeeds Act 2015
This law is a newer version of the No Child Left Behind Act but some of flaws have been changed. Here are two examples Gargiulo and Bouck (2018) list "Eliminates "highly qualified" teacher status and allows states to adopt the common core State Standards but does not require their adoption" (p.51). It also change a few other things about the old law. By improving the old flaws hopefully it will help teachers, parents and students do better with education achievements.
