Sputnic 1 is launched
Sputnic 1 was the first ship in space. When it was launched the U.S was very scared of the launchers the Soviet Union. The U.S thought if they can put someting in space then they could easily launch a missile and attack them. This wasn't good for America. -

Riding on the Sputnic 2 was Laika the first dog and even living creature in space. It was less then a month and the Soviet Union was already launching Sputnic 2 with a dog in it. The Soviets were already scaring the U.S so much they decided to fight back. -

Riding Apollo 11 was Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were riding in it. The first man to land on the moon was Neil Armstrong then Buzz Aldrin but Michael Collins didnt get to walk on the moon. All three of these people were Americans we may have a chance. -

Luna 15 was launched the day after Neil Armstrong was on the moon it was going to collect things from space but instead the made it crash into the Americans landing spot sorta. Luna 15 crashed and that marked the end of the space race America won. -
